Hoping to turn up tonight- you will know if I did by the time you read this, probably- but am working in SA till 6pm. We talk about "going down the town" as a verb, but don't use downtown as a noun- always centre, like the rest of Europe. I always think "downtown" sounds very negative and disparaging, such is the semantic power of habit and usage, tho' I understand intellectually that it doesn't have that connotation across the ocean.
