Good morning

Winter Bike to Work Day is this Friday, February 14. We’ll be offering refreshments for cyclists in our Bike Storage Facility starting at 7:30 a.m. Please feel free to join us. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see our Facility yet, we’d love to give you a tour.
Hope to see you there!

It's from a downtown business organization on behalf of a couple of the downtown shopping malls and a property management company. Sounds good, right? Except overnight tonight and into tomorrow there's going to be a lot of rain and gale force winds. You don't really want to be riding your bike across the bridge over the harbour in that kind of weather. The organizers, of course, would have set this up weeks ago and are probably now cursing as they listen to the weather reports. Heh.

Tomorrow is that day where, if you're single like i was for a lot of years, you end up feeling like an outsider no matter whether you felt perfectly ok being single, like I did,  or not. Yes, you do see cards for everyone and anyone, parents, friends, etc. to include them but the overall message is that Valentine's Day is for Lovers and if you don't have one, you should probably just write this day off. I believe that having someone special in my life is a luxury, but not a necessity. I do now have the luxury of a man in my life and I do not take that for granted. He makes me very happy. I believe that I am an amazing person, with or without a partner. I knew someone who really felt she was nothing without a man in her life. I learned over time that wasn't true. I am awesome in my own right.

I always felt that If I ever had a partner, I wouldn't make a big deal on VD or incorporate any grand romantic gestures if only not to pander to the crooks that jack up the flower prices and the food prices in the "romantic" restaurants. It's easier to do that when your partner lives 3000 miles away, mind you. We do exchange cards. Cards I don't mind. I like cards, always have. I always felt that a card is at least as important as a gift and more important, even. That comes from my mother who loves cards and always made sure we knew that if we couldn't afford a gift, that was ok, but do buy a card, or even make one, that was ok too. As a result, I appreciate cards for birthdays and for VD and take great care in picking cards out for other people for special occasions.

I've told Graham that VD isn't a big thing for me so aside from the card, a fuss need not be made. My birthday is 3 weeks later. Make a fuss then. No. I insist. Really. :)))) Plus the flowers and restaurant prices will be back to normal. Ok, he's 3000 miles away and we've only been together on my birthday once. But still. And it's tradition, my birthday card from him is a cartoon which I love! It's hand made, it's one of a kind and it's meaningful to us, just like the traditional Christmas song he writes for me, too. They are a piece of him, just for me. That means a lot more than a romantic fuss on Valentine's Day.

Dessert is no longer a common appearance at out dinner table so Valentine's Day (along with every other special day in the year) is an excuse to have it. Valentine's Day usually wins my prize for the best chocolate desserts. I've already bought tomorrow's - a small heart-shaped Chocolate Truffle. *drool*

Yes chocolate is in abundance, but with Graham being diabetic, it's not something we indulge in a lot together though he does still have dessert if we go out somewhere nice.

We don't normally make a huge fuss over VD (well OK, no fuss at all LOL) but this year Nikki spotted M&S were doing a meal deal that looked pretty nice, so that's what we're doing. Only the portion sizes looked a bit on the small side to me, so I've got us a meal deal *each*. There may be left overs :o) Candlelight in the dining room and all that. It'll make a real nice change from the regular Friday fare (v. quick dinner or take-out, eaten in front of the TV). Sometimes you just need an excuse to posh it up a bit!
