Halifax is vying to be the Canadian city that applies to have the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Some say we shouldn't get it as it's a lot of money to be spent but i think it might be a good thing. A nice large new facility would be built on a piece of land that was formerly a military housing base which is now just sitting there empty. If Halifax gets the nod to be the Canadian city, i think the other two cities that want to hold the games are Glasgow and Abuja in Nigeria. I don't know anything about the city in Nigeria but i expect Glasgow might be tough competition. It would be nice to get the games though. The decision will be announced later this morning.
Rapper 50 Cent played Halifax last night and the security was apparent. Everyone, or many going in to the concert were searched. Sounds like they went a bit overboard on the security because this man's music seems to promote violence. He had a long wait in customs at the airport too, but then he's got a criminal record and had to get a special visa (i think, so don't quote me on that). You know, rap might have been born and bred on the street but at $60 a ticket and $35 for a tshirt, it ain't for the financially strapped.
Lots of election bullshit flying about. It's always interesting to see how much they all want to spend on this and that, saying they'll cut taxes. So where's the money going to come from to pay for all that spending?
A city council in Nova Iguacu just outside Rio De Janeiro has passed a bill that will require night clubs, malls, theatres, restaurants and the like to have a third category of toilet facilities. For transvestites! Seems biological men and women both are uncomfortable with TV's in their loos. They've passed the bill but it hasn't been signed into law yet. The news article says there's 28,000 transvestites (i wonder if that includes transexuals? sometimes the reporters clump them all under one banner) in a city of about 800,000. So the question is, will that encourage discrimination or satisfy what may be a real concern for a lot of people? It's an interesting debate i would say and valid if there's enough people on both sides of the issue that want it but it would be pricey for the establishments to install the facilities.
