My friend took me out to pick up a new microwave today. We went to The Brick but they didn't have the one that was advertised in the flyer so we went to good ole WalMart where I got a Black and Decker one. It's a little smaller than the old one but still a good wattage. Black and shiny. Both of us techie type people couldn't figure out how to set the damn clock! lol! We did figure it out eventually. We went to Starbucks for a break and that was enough for me, I am done in. It was so nice to get out in the sunshine and in the shops though.
I started knitting a black hat with a white skull on it, like the one i made for Graham last year. He has a coworker that wants one and is paying a bit for it so i said i would. It knits up pretty fast. I started it on a circular needle, forgetting that it was a pain in the ass to do the design in the round like that so i tore it all out and started it again on straight needles and still had to pull some of it out as i got the design backwards. I think i'm on the right track now.
I'm also planning to knit my friend some sock monkey mittens. She'll love them!
Being off the grid for awhile, i'm behind in my book list...
52. Not Dead Yet - Peter James
Detective must keep a Hollywood star from being killed. Star has had death threats and is filming in Brighton. We see several of her more obsessed fans, is the killer one of them? There are other murders that are being investigated, are they related? It was a pretty good book, I liked it because it took place in Brighton around the Pavillion which I've been to so I could picture it.
53. The Orphan Master's Son - Adam Johnson
Liked part of it, didnt' like the second half. It's about a North Korean who rises through the ranks of government agents while doing various jobs including a professional kidnapper and a spy listening to codes while on a merchant ship. Eventually he takes the place of a high level official and is accepted as such even though he's clearly not that person. He takes over the life and family, the wife is/was a famous Korean movie star whom he'd always admired. In the second half of the book he's in a prison and being tortured and we are told his story as this official through knowlege gained from interviews etc. It's supposed to be an insightful look into how things are in Communist North Korea. It's well written but I enjoyed the first half better than the second half.
54. Midnight Riot - Ben Aaronovitch
The first of a series about London constable Peter Grant who has been selected as part of a special group of investigators that use magic as part of their methods and they are often searching for culprits among the spirit world. It's a little different slant on things. The main character is fairly likeable and the situations are a bit off the wall but in a good way.
55. Revenge Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger
I never read The Devil Wears Prada though I really liked the movie. This is a sequel that takes place 10 years later. Can't say I really enjoyed it. More of a review here.
56. The Confusion of Karen Carpenter - Jonathan Harvey
Second chicklit novel by Corrie writer and talented playwrite Jonathan Harvey. This is about a woman who's husband has left her and she's not dealing with it very well. Trying to start again, having a mother with a middle age crisis and dealing with the grief from a baby that had died a couple of years before. It's not as grim as it seems but it does end up with a serious side too as Karen works her way through to a hopeful end. Really enjoyed it.

57. Mariana - Susannah Kearsley
Julia ends up owning a house she'd come across twice earlier in her life, it was as if she was meant to live there. When she finally does own the house, she moves in and starts experiencing a time travel, where she goes back and seems to embody the person of Mariana who lived there in the 17th century. She has no control over when she travels back and forth or how long she goes back but she realizes she has to right a wrong in the past. I really liked this one, definitely worth reading. Have read another one of hers and have another on the go at the moment, all with time travel as an element but each a little different.
58. No One's Angel - Kelly Walker
Hated it. Here's why.
59. The Redeemer - Jo Nesbo
Another of the Harry Hole detective books. Really liking these. Wish I'd read them in order though because i keep reading spoilers for books I haven't read yet!
60. The Flock - James Robert Smith
This was a bit different. There's a flock of dinosaur like birds that have evolved into enormous creatures and live hidden in a Florida swamp/savanna type wilderness that is being threatened by redevelopment into a theme park. A young parks officer gets caught up in the middle of a billionaire researcher, the developers and a survivalist gung-ho group. The flock are sentient and intelligent and it's very interesting to read the chapters from their points of view, how they live, how their society works. One of them has started breaking the rules and living "rogue" which threatens their existence. I liked the Flock chapters but the human chapters weren't as well written with cliche dialogue and somewhat clunky plot and action.
61. Disintegration - Scott Nicholson
Identical twins with a very troubled life behind them are grappling for control over the familiy fortune. One brother is a developer, taking up their father's business, while the other, who has been away from their hometown for years, was left the family home and land but can't sell it. The developer survived a horrific house fire where he lost his daughter. He and his wife split up, unable to deal with it, having also lost an infant the year before. As the story unfolds there's more of their childhood and background that comes out and both brothers prove to be headcases. None of them end up being very nice people and all of them could use some time in a padded room if you ask me.
Ok. I think i will have a little nap.
