Latest in the book list... Might finish one or two more by the end of the year.  I've decided to reread Anna Karenina, another book I haven't read since school. It seems to be something I've been doing, picking up a classic now and then to reread or try for the first time, but mostly only the ones I remember liking or figure I will like. When you haven't read something in so long, you definitely get more out of it than the first time but, like Tess of the D'Urbervilles, might not enjoy it as much as you think you did then. I think I will like Anna, though and I'm looking forward to what will feel like a fresh perspective since really, all i know if it now is the basic storyline, without remembering much detail about the book.

94. The Criminals We Deserve by James Craig
Another John Carlyle crime novel, this one was decent.

95. The Book of Secrets by M.G. Vassanji
Not quite what the book blurb described it to be, not bad, but not at the top of my list.

96. Deirdre: A Life on Coronation Street by Glenda Young
Written by my friend, an officially released book about Corrie character Deirdre Barlow. She did a great job and had access to a lot of photos from ITV, many of which had never been published before.

97. Avenue of Mysteries by John Irving
Liked this one though maybe not quite up to his earlier books. Story about an author from Mexico, middle aged, traveling to Philippines, and thinking back to his childhood.

98. The Illusionists by Rosie Thomas
Really, really liked this one, about a variety theatre in late Victorian times.

99. Among Others by Jo Walton
Told in diary form about a 15 year old who escaped her mad witch (literally) of a mother and is now at boarding school. Diary tells about her but also where she writes about all the SF and fantasy books and authors that she loves and devours. If i read those types of books more than once in awhile and was familiar with the older novels and authors from the 70s backwards, I would likely have got more out of it. Also got the feeling this was a sequel to another book but now i know all the important things that happened so there's no need to see if there is actually one. It was ok.

100. The Outlander by Gil Adamson
Really good one, about a woman who kills her husband after her infant dies and goes on the run. It's 1903, in Canada's west. She makes it to the mountains and has to try to survive and nearly doesn't. A hermit finds her, they fall for each other but then he leaves her again. She ends up in a mining settlement keeping house for a minister who is building a church. Her brothers-in-law, ginger twins, are tracking her to take her to justice. Memories of her childhood and her marriage interwoven with her current adventures and the people she meets. Lovely prose, very good, very involving.
