Pride Isn't Necessarily A Deadly Sin

Pride Week was launched in Halifax yesterday and officially this morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Grand Parade Square. Mayor Peter Kelly read a proclamation and raised the rainbow flag on a pole at one side of the Square overlooking St. Paul's Church and the War Memorial. I don't remember all the proclamation now but it was well written and read to a group of about 50 or so. There were four Councillors there as well, all women (Snow, Wile, Sloane and McClusky). Out of 23 Councillors, half of them men, four women lent their support. Ok, it's summer and some of each are likely away on vacation. Ah well i shouldn't be so cynical should i? lol The atmosphere was as bright and sunny as the skies even though it doesn't look it in the photo below of the flag being raised.

I decided i wanted to go and lend my support since i was working right across the street. I had read about it in Sunday's paper detailing the events for the week. There was *nothing* distributed this morning in the corporate email which was disappointing. Probably why i didn't see any other staff there. I'm sure a few would have run across the street on their break like i did. They had a reception in City Hall after but i headed back to my office, chatting with Gloria McClusky, the grand Dame of the councillors, on the way. She's amazing, she's well into her 70's, active and full of piss and vinegar. She was mayor of the City of Dartmouth before Amalgamation in 1996 and had retired until she decided to run for Council again last election.

Anyway, Here's the photo of Mayor Kelly and Councillor Snow (in the tan shorts) and one of the two representatives of the group (who were standing behind me). I've sent a few photos to the webmaster though i don't know if they'll use it or not and i plan to write a paragraph for the next HRM newsletter when they publish it in the fall. :)
