Using this tutorial on a group on Flickr, I have learned a much better way to convert a colour photo to black and white. It really makes the photo pop when you do it these ways, by using colour filters. That might sound odd as it's a black and white photo but because it started as colour, the file still has all the colour data in it. Filtering or channel mixing, emphasizes different colour layers. You can see below, the picture on the left is a straight up black and white conversion. The photo on the left uses the channel mixing feature described in the tutorial under the Flickr edit section but you can do the same thing in Photoshop or Paintshop or the like. There is definitley a difference and i shall be using this method from now on when i want to convert a photo. I like the way black and white works with a photo sometimes especially if there are patterns or textures or shadows that a colour photo doesn't highlight as well.
