Apr. 13th, 2014 08:51 pmI've been here a week and things are going ok. G.'s dad is moved to a hospice and his surroundings are a lot nicer and more comfortable. The staff are great and have a little more time to do things for him than the nurses in the hospital. The hospice here is not usually the last place you are, but a place where they assess you and find out what they can do for you. They are trying things that will make him more comfortable and maybe a little stronger. They tell us after they're finished their assessment, they along with Social Services and the family will decide what the options are and what's best for him. Some patients are eventually able to go home but we don't think that will happen. It could be possible he'll go to a n for both of them. ursing home and the pallative care would be taken care of there. There's one just around the corner right here so if they had a bed available, that would be perfect for both of them.
His dad is not in quite as dire straits as he was a few wees ago when they gave the initial prognosis of a few weeks (worst case scenario) to a few months. He's stablized and is a little stronger but that's only relative. He can't get out of bed on his own tho they did get him up once or twice this week. He gets tired very easily and periodic weak spells. He does enjoy us coming to see him but resists nodding off to sleep if we're there, too though we tell him not to worry. Have a little nap and we'll go get a cuppa. It's difficult seeing him like that but it's also good when we can do little things for him as well. It's hard to know how long we'll have him but G. hopes that the hospice or nursing home can give him at least some comfort and quality of life while he's here. It would be nice if he can get to where he can be out of bed a bit in a wheelchair and can be taken outside into the fresh air now and then.
we have done a few things like Go on the Coronation Street tour at the old studios which was really good. We also had a nice drive out into the Peak district and visited Chatsworth House which was used in the latest Pride and Prejudice film. We're looking to do a drive up to the Lake district this week as well. We are going to try to visit a small costume museum and have some time shopping. Maybe a movie tomorrow night. We've spent some time with friends and will catch up with them again this week. If G's dad is still doing about the same as now, we'll have the weekend in London before i fly home next Monday. It will do Graham some good too to have a bit of a break.
It's a little different from our usual holiday but spending time together is the most important thing as is supporting him.
In other news, the GPS i bought at home and topped up wiht UK maps is working pretty well though it did lead us in a circle out in the middle of the Peaks the other day. Technology isn't always what it's cracked up to be!
