The United Way Kickoff yesterday was good. Not a huge turnout but a couple hundred anyway. Got a taxi over with a coworker and we took the bus back, the one they were putting on for employees. They had tug of war, bus pull, .. oh i said all that yesterday anyway. We watched the bus pull. That was interesting. 10 people had to stand between two lines and pull a bus towards them about 35 meters. There was a driver in the bus to keep it straight and to back it up to the starting point again. The 10 people would pull the rope hand over hand and really, once the bus started to roll, it wasn't so bad lol Mind you most of the team members for any given team looked like a hard day's graft wasn't unfamiliar to them. We're talking the firefighters, the road crews, mechanics etc. Although the mayor did head up one team which was cool. He's a relatively young man in his late 40's or maybe 50 and fit though not a big man. He looks even younger. The winning team's time was something like 24 seconds which was astonishing! I expected it would take minutes !
They had a dunk tank that looked fun if cold. One guy sat there with a fishing hat, hip waders and a fishing rod and got plunged into the water three times in three throws lol There was a barbeque, a mini golf round where the last hole was played inside a bus, there was supposed to be a jeopardy type quiz but either it didn't happen or we didn't see it. They had an HRM Idol karaoke at the end but only 3 people signed up for it. The last man up was truly an HRM Idol. He's a fabulous singer and nobody wanted to leave on the bus until after he had sang, he's a favourite!
Got back to the office about 2 and home my usual time. It was cold out, sunny but a brisk wind but most of the events were inside the big cavernous bus garages so you could stay out of the chilly air.
United Way is an umbrella charity that supports a lot of other charities.
