tvordlj: (Doctor Who)

I downloaded the first ep of the new season of Doctor Who. Yeah i know, illegal as hell. I just can't wait until the fall for CBC to air it!

Can i just say, i miss Christopher Eccleston. David Tennant is ok but it's going to be an uphill battle to get used to him. And i know i can knit pick with the best of them but i really thought overall the episode was fairly good. I did wonder why Cassandra was so surprised that Rose was, as she said, "a chav", when she knew perfectly well what Rose looked like. *some* people pick on things like 21st century clothes or phone booths but i say they were just recreating earth. And sometimes the old fashioned stuff works the best ;) I thought Billie Piper did a pretty good job though i became quite fond of Cassandra's assistant, Chip. The cat makeup was pretty good too.

Tennant is good, i'm not taking that away from him. I didn't grow up with Doctor Who so getting used to a different personality along with the face is a bit weird for me. Having said all that, i am looking forward to the rest of the series!

I didnt miss him one bit. I didnt even think of the other Doctor.

Cassandra had probably never heard of the word Chav and when she took over Roses body she knew what she was if that makes sense

That bit bugged me, too. Last season, Cassandra didn't know the difference between an MP3 and a jukebox. Why would know know what a Chav was? It was a cheap gag that sort of jarred the story.

I didn't miss Eccleston, either. :)

I expect if you've seen the show a lot and are more used to the changing faces, it might not be as hard to get used to a new one. I know the old series has been on several cable channels here but i haven't really watched it. I am going to have to look out for it now though :)

I think traditionally the Doctor has been a bit more flamboyant and eccentric than Eccleston was. If you can find Tom Baker episodes, you'll see what I mean. He's generally accepted as The Best Doctor Ever. I think Tennant will give him a run for his money, though.

Well he's certainly flamboyant and eccentric. I guess that's the problem, where i'm not familiar with the whole or other series of the Doctor. I've really only got the one to compare with and i became quite attached to him! lol! I"m not being negative, not really. I certainly am willing to accept him but at this early point, i still have my favourite. I'm sure i've seen Tom Baker's Doctor in the foggy past. I remember the deep voice.

what time is Cassandra from though? from the look of that party last night it looked like the 80's but I suppose she must be from the future, or is she from another world....... you are right it was a cheap gag, I never really thought of Rose as a chav anyway

She's the last human and obviously there's something weird there if she managed to live until 5 billion years into the future.

oh yeah I forgot she was, obviously just before the end of humanity they all started dressing like they were in the 80's heheheee

That was one thing that [livejournal.com profile] gramie_dee pointed out last night. 5 billion and 23 and they're dressing in today's clothes with a current day phone booth in the hallway of a futuristic hospital :) I never even thought about it.

From: [identity profile] trixiedelarue.livejournal.com
yeah but I remember Space 1999 and how they used to dress I feel cheated...

I have two more gripes to add. Will we really still use pulley system elevators 5 billion years from now? And in fact, in 5 billion years I'm sure the human race will have evolved a bit more and will certainly look different to how we do now. Look at the difference between us and neanderthal man.

What do you mean you can't tell by looking at me???

Anyway, it could have been more acceptable if it wasn't supposed to be so far in the future. Further than we've ever gone before? I don't think so. A very bold claim that wasn't backed up.

I'm not sure what time she's supposed to be from, but I assumed it was something more futuristic. The technology to make her into a strip of skin with a brain stem existed, so it must be some time in the future?

Are we really sad to be discussing this? :)

From the teaser being shown here, the rest of the series looks great!
If you can see the Doctor Who Confidential (which is shown after each episode here), they explain about why they brought Cassandra into the story and more.

Having watched the show since the late 70's, I'm quite used to the changes of Doctor, but prefer some to others. I did love Christopher, but will wait to see more before deciding if he was better than David.

Yes i think i can see the Confidentials on the bbc site. The two are very different, obviously. Last year's was more "alien" you know? More detached, a bit cold sometimes, and a bit haunted. This one is far more "human", emotional and open. What i'd like to see is, when they go back in time, that they get out of the Victorian era. They've been back there a few times now in just the one season and now next week as well.

Tennant is great! He's got a natural eccentricity that really works. I liked Eccleston, but I always felt I was watching a performance with him.

Have you seen Casanova? It might still be available on UKNova. David Tennant plays the lead and it was written by Russell T Davis. It'll give you a chance to see how great they both can be.

I haven't seen it, no. I think Tennant is good, certainly aren't taking that away from him. He's definitely a great actor. His Doctor doesn't seem to have as much of a dark edge as last year's but it's early days yet, too.

"I liked Eccleston, but I always felt I was watching a performance with him."

My sentiment exactly. I think Tennant has settled in to the role much more quickly whereas Eccleston admitted it took him a few episodes to feel his feet.

Date: 2006-04-17 03:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gracefruit.livejournal.com
I don't know that he ever found his feet, but a lot of that has to do with the writing.

I think he did well and I did like him as the Doctor. I just feel as though Tennant knows more about what the Doctor is about and has injected just the right amount of "expected" flamboyance/eccentricity etc while still making the part his own.

I must sound like I didn't like him, and that's not true. There were some really good moments with him, but I never got the impression he was a fan of the show. Tennant is obviously a huge fan and plays the part with a lot more love and affection.

Gawds, I'm a saddo!

Gah! This is so frustrating.

I'm trying to be a good little citizen and resist the urge to jump online and start downloading new episodes like crazy ... but it's really, really terribly difficult. We're so far behind! After all, we just now got "Dalek" on Friday night.

*whinge whinge*

'course, I suppose it's payback for how far behind the rest of the world usually is for American TV. I should probably just shut up now :)

From: [identity profile] tvor.livejournal.com
LOL well you could probably get last season out on dvd. Is it showing on the space channel? Had you watched any of the old series in years past?

Date: 2006-04-17 10:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fudebusho.livejournal.com
Oh, it's true. I could buy all of the DVDs off amazon.co.uk if I so desired. I just like the idea of having something new to watch every Friday night -- and yes, it's on the SciFi Network (cable).

I figure that we'll get through all of Series One -- and then the new episodes are fair game for downloading, as who knows when we'll get them? (Probably not until after the new year!)

I wasn't so much a fan of the old series(es) ... I'd catch them from time to time but that's about all. The husband, now, on the other hand ... he grew up watching the Tom Baker Doctor and is quite obsessed.

Have you investigated [livejournal.com profile] who_daily? Great source of info if you can dodge the spoilers ...

From: [identity profile] tvor.livejournal.com
Hmm i think there would be too many spoilers if i didn't get the ep downloaded. i might bookmark it for after i see the eps though. thanks!

CBC last year carried last year's within a week after the UK broadcast but they didn't have a hockey season. this spring they put the playoffs on every night as usual now that it's back so they are putting it off until October!! No way i could wait that long!
