While killing time before i met a friend for dinner last night, i poked my nose into John Doull's bookshop, a wonderful second hand bookstore in downtown Halifax. The shop is full of shelves, along the walls and in the aisles and books are piled on stacks on the floor and lined up on the floor in front of the shelves. This is a little peek hole they've made by gluing some books together and cutting out the tops and bottoms to add to the circle. I had a rummage through the travel section and then picked up an old paperback copy of The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence. I'm ashamed to admit i'm not a big fan of Canadian literature though have read some good ones over the years but i read this years ago and seemed to recall that i liked it. There's a movie of it coming out soon so i want to reread it. Ellen Burstyn is in the movie and Ellen Page has a small part in it.

Dinner was nice. We went to the Old Triangle which was very busy, more than i expected for a Tuesday night. We got the last table available in a corner and ended up sitting next to a table where two of my coworkers were! *wave* My friend is from the Netherlands so we chatted about Amsterdam a bit and got some good ideas where there were some nice areas to explore. I got home about 9 o'clock just as it was getting dark and i realized how late the sun was staying up these days. You'd think it was almost summer. Except you wouldn't think it going by the temperatures in the mornings. Still down in the low single digits and it's been quite windy lately. I think it's going to warm up in the daytime though. Maybe. I'm getting so tired of it being cold most of the time.

Many of you know [livejournal.com profile] blueberrymoon and if you don't, you should definitely check out her journal. She's an artist and a photographer. She sells her paintings on eBay and prints of her paintings and her photography on Etsy.com and today she greeted her friends and family at the Love, Me boutique on Birmingham Street in Halifax. Love, Me features crafts and hand made items including local artists and they are featuring her photos and other items made from her photos and paintings such as buttons, cards, mini purse mirrors, and her prints, framed and unframed. You can see the framed prints i the pics through the cut. I went after work for a little while but my back was not up to standing for too long. The shop was filling up when i left, though. Shelagh's work is always wonderful. Her paintings are bright and cheerful folk art and her photography is just *that* good! One of my favourite photos is this one that she took of her daughter's checked socks and red shoes against a black and white tiled step in London. I bought a set of cards, one of which is this one so i can get a red frame for it. I also bought a button of one of her paintings, cat looking at a night sky. Seeing a photo or painting on her LJ always brightens up my flist :)

Got a call from a friend in Ontario who had her thyroid out 2 weeks ago. The largest lump wasn't cancerous at all though the two very small ones were but they believe they've got it all. Two days after the surgery, her dog had to be put down but she got a new puppy quite soon after. She's a long time online friend that i've met a couple of times face to face and is the nicest person you could know. Before i met her, she survived a brain tumour (surgery).

We had a nice evening, hanging out with our mates from the Manchester area (all of whom ANOLJ). Sadly, a couple others ([livejournal.com profile] swanofkennet and [livejournal.com profile] trixiedelarue) couldn't make it but [livejournal.com profile] gramie_dee and i will catch up with them on Monday in the Lakes. We ate at a curry buffet restaurant and completely stuffed ourselves but no ill effects today, luckily. Graham is taking his dad out this afternoon and i'm staying in to cook a lasagna and probably mess about with my photos, too. We have so many between us and even picking a couple of the better ones from each place we went, did or saw in Paris is going to make for a lot of photos. Will definitely have to make a 'highlights' album.
tvordlj: (Paris)
How was the trip to Paris? I have four blisters and very sore feet so yeah, a smashing success!!! :)) The strikes in Paris weren't toooo bad, there were still busses and metro trains running, some on quite reduced schedules but mostly they didn't get in our way and we walked a lot. A. Lot. It was cloudy and spitty rainy the first two days but Wednesday was lovely. still cool but at least sunny. we didn't do all the things i had thought about but looking back, what i had had in my mind would have been *very* ambitious even with a fully functional transport system. If the transport or general strike put up a roadblock we just did something else.

more details will be forth coming and i have to offload my pics onto graham's computer this weekend. Highlights were Notre dame, Montmartre, the Dali exhibition, the Louvre (sort of, i was completely knackered and walking on burning feet so we only saw a few things but it was still neat to be there) and the nighttime boat ride on the seine was pretty great too. oh and seeing the Eiffel tower all lit up and throwing off sparklies for 10 minutes every hour too was pretty impressive. we also dropped into the british museum for an hour of so before meeting up with London locals last night. (oh, and the eurostar in semi-first class was FAB and even the Virgin train from London today was nice).

Thanks to everyone that came out last night, excellent night and so great to see you all! [livejournal.com profile] stevek, [livejournal.com profile] silverfiligree, [livejournal.com profile] sparklielizard, [livejournal.com profile] zoo_music_girl, [livejournal.com profile] childeric, [livejournal.com profile] naturalbornkaos, [livejournal.com profile] sarahofthedead, [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray, [livejournal.com profile] swisstone, [livejournal.com profile] kekhmet, Glenda and Barry (WANOLJ), and apologies to those I didn't get a chance to talk much to.

Back to Manchester today. the sun is shining (as it wasx in London yesterday and i have to say, in all my visits, i don't think i've ever seen it so blue in either city while i'd been before) and it's cold but it is almost december after all. Weekend will be somewhat low key while my feet recover. Dinner out with the Manchester area mob tomorrow night and dinner with G's dad on Sunday night. Then we're going to do a couple of day trips next week and i want to fit a shopping day in. We've got a nifty little hire car to zip around in and ooooh we bought each other new mobile phones for Christmas so we've got new toys to play with!

I've been reading Harry Potter all week. Even though i did cheat when the book came out and peeked at spoilers, it's not the same as reading it is it? It's quite good and moving along quite well. I do get annoyed at Harry always whinging about his lot in life and nobody being straight with him. This very negative attitude started in Order of the Phoenix and hasn't improved much. Yes, Yes i know. Look at what he's been through, you wouldn't expect him to be a cheery soul would you? No i wouldn't. Doesn't mean it still doesn't get on my nerves. Anyway i'm enjoying it.

Meeting a former coworker after work on Friday i think, for a drink or two. She moved to Florida awhile ago now. There aren't too many left in the office that would still remember her or who knew her that well.

Is it ever chilly out today! It was supposed to get warm but it didn't and it's damn cold waiting in the wind for the bus coming home!
tvordlj: (Umbrella)
It's raining quite hard. After that one week of stinking hot and humid weather, it's not been quite so bad and this will help. I think. Anyway it will be cool for sleeping tonight.

Had a lovely chat last night with [livejournal.com profile] lola_is_naughty all about Paris. I shall take lots of his advice on board. :)

All day today, it's felt like Thursday. Odd since we had Monday off. You 'd think it would feel more like Tuesday than Thursday. Only wish it was because then tomorrow would be Friday!

A few weeks ago i bought some cards on Ebay. The artwork on the cards is (are?) a print of paintings that an actor from Corrie has done, in the form of cariacatures, or, Corriecatures as she calls them. The ebay auctions said they'd be signed and numbered but they weren't so i emailed her. She's gonna send me more! :)

Hmmm I tried to top up my new Pay as you Go and take advantage of the $100 top up that then gives you 365 days before it expires. I tried to do it via the automated menus on the phone. Except it doesn't know that you can't just do that by telling it how much you want to top up and giving it your credit card details. It just says it can't process your credit card and transfers you to a real person. Who then told me they only to the $100 by voucher, so i'd have to buy a voucher first and then call and have them top up using the voucher number. Fair enough but they will need to get the automated menu to tell you that it only takes 10 or 20 dollar top ups. :) I'll just wait until payday now, i guess and do that then.

The reunion last night was nice. A few of us met up beforehand at the home of one of us. "Us"? the group of friends that I hung out with in high school. We still keep in touch and see each other, less frequently than we used to but we still touch base. 8 of us went to the reunion this time. I saw a couple others i went through school with and had some nice conversations. The canoe club was a lovely place to have it, right on the lake. Most people stood out on the big deck rather than sit inside. I think there were not as many people this time as the last one i went to in 2002 but there was probably upwards of 100 there, most of whom i didn't know. I did recognize a few faces but never did know them well enough to talk to. There were two cash bars, one inside the old club building (lovely building too, apparently built in 1903 i think) and one outside on the deck. That was a canoe filled with ice and bottles of beer and coolers! Great idea! There are a few photos including one of the boat-bar here. Obviously not really relevant to most of you out there but the one of the boat with the beer in it is there too. Got home about 1 a.m.

Today i have to get a move on and get the car back to Mom early this afternoon. Tomorrow is a holiday, celebrating the birthday of the cities so there have been things going on all weekend. Not sure if i'll take in any of the events or not. It would be nice to get out in the sun.

Had a lovely day out with my mate Tracey. We went to an early afternoon showing of Hairspray and then went for a bite to eat. Dropped into Future Shop as she wanted a new phone and i bought another 1 gig SD card for my camera that they had on for $16.99. Now i've got three 1 gig cards and that should be plenty for a trip. I might get another spare battery too.

Hairspray was a lot of fun. Real toe-tapping music and lots of dancing. John Waters had a brief cameo, he was on and off the screen in a ... er.. flash ;) I loved all the performances, even John Travolta in drag. He really could move well in all that latex. Tracey had a bit of trouble accepting it but the role is meant to be for a man in drag playing the mother so you don't really have to *believe* it's a woman. I think he did a great job though i do wish they'd have thinned his eyebrows a bit. He looked *fabulous* in the pink sparkly dress! I really enjoyed Queen Latifah, too and Michelle Pfeiffer was really delicious as a stuck up bitch, great reactions and line delivery. God, she's getting even thinner as she gets older though. Starting to look haggard though i suppose some of that was the makeup job. The tv ads for the movie are calling it "Grease" for our generation. Maybe not quite in that category, i don't think, mainly because there is a lot more singing and dancing than dialogue and character development. The characters don't really have as much depth or charisma as the ones in Grease either, other than Tracy, her parents and Queen Latifah's Motormouth Mabel. Pfeiffer is a good villain too but the others really are just peripheral or a bit bland. Just don't compare it to Grease and you'll be fine. It's definitely worth a couple of hours, with some talented singers and a few lines that will have you laughing out loud.

My friend just got back from a Cisco conference in California. The Customer Appreciation night had a concert featuring a Led Zep tribute band opening for... KISS. *THE* KISS... makeup and boots and tongue and all! and she didn't have her camera with her!!! She had a fantastic time and says she's going to send me a photo of her all done up in KISS makeup! They had a booth for the face painting! Late night, a bit hung over in the morning, only to discover that the morning's keynote speaker was none other than John Cleese!!! She wouldn't have dragged herself to it for anyone else and said he was awesome!

Nasty power outage caused the LJ bork last night apparently.

Looks like i've gathered a few people to go to the high school reunion. Now i've got to call up and sort out a ticket for myself. It's $25 now or $35 at the door. Cheaper to do it now. I think i might go shopping after work and see if i can find anything new to wear, a top or something that will go with one of my skirts maybe. I'm not planning to dress up too fancy but it would be nice to have something new and the shops have their summer sales on now.

Summer. Yes. We're finally getting it this week!

You know, it's happened again. Someone you know dies and then you find out that someone else is pregnant. A coworker just announced that his wife is having their second baby. It seems to go that way so often, doesn't it? I mean, of course it does, that's life, deaths and births but so often you hear of someone you know having a baby right after you hear about someone passing, either just announcing the pregnancy or an actual birth. Sometimes it's a death shortly after a birth. A few years ago, a good internet friend of mine passed away just a couple of months after his second grandson was born.

Met up with [livejournal.com profile] wyndancyr after work yesterday and we strolled the waterfront, braving the crowds and taking photos of the Tall Ships docked. We didn't see all of them but quite a few and decided the Dutch Urania was our favourite because it had the cutest sailors (so far). Today i'm going to go back again and see the rest of them from the far end of the waterfront and back to the main section. Two of the big ships had "entrance" gates to the area so we couldn't get closer to them. I think that was because they were getting ready to film a suppertime news show, Live at Five. Hopefully the dock will be open today and i can get closer. It's the Picton Castle and Prince William ships and both are large Class A ships. The official photos of the ships are on the website. We wandered and finally had a meal in Tug's Pub where i heard all about their recent trip to London. Loads of adventures! The service was a bit slow but they were quite busy as was pretty much every eatery within earshot of the harbour and the story look just about that long to tell anyway :) We left about 8 and made our way back. Crowds were a lot heavier then and i expect it will be pretty bad today too but i'll stick it out as long as i can. I didn't get home until after 9 but it was a lovely evening. The weather is overcast right now but it seems to be showing signs of getting nicer. It's warm anyway, and that's a plus. There will be photos but i will collect them all together first and put them in some sort of order.

I had a lovely long chat to my future father-in-law tonight. It's his 80th birthday today. I'd sent a card but thought i would call as well. We talked the gamut of things from weather, to politics, Paris to Elba to Oliver Cromwell. Discovered he likes history, too, like i do and we discussed Cromwell and where he'd fit in with today's politics, and also Napoleon. He'd been to Elba to visit the compound where Napoleon was held in exile the first time. he told me all about his new kitchen that the council is going to put in and i promised i'd make him a lasagna when i come over in November. One thing that was quite nice... He liked the card i sent and could tell it was chosen with thought and said he felt like he has another daughter who lives away so that was nice to hear :) He thinks of his late son's wife as a daughter rather than daughter-in-law but of course he's known her since she was 17.

Sometimes hard to get a word in edgeways and it took me three tries to say good bye :) Aw but he's a lovely man, he is. Loves to talk. Said he likes to talk politics with his mates down at the bookies' and it's a good thing the walls don't have ears or his feet wouldn't touch the ground. I said they'd have you in the Tower for treason and insurrection and that comment led to a discussion on the princes in the Tower! did you know that they are now guessing that the princes were taken to a monastery and killed and buried there? :) That's how conversations seem to go with Bill, one subject rapidly leading in to the next! He's pretty spry for 80 and he's got a little dog and a bird to take care of too.

Cbc's showing season 3 of Doctor Who starting tonight. Nope, as i thought, they aren't starting with the Christmas special with the Runaway Bride. I wonder if they showed it and i didn't catch the ads? They were rerunning season two late at night on weekends for awhile. Doesn't matter, i've already downloaded it and seen it anyway. I'll rewatch the series anyway :)

Family

Family means a lot. Family is who you are and where you came from. Our family, Dad's side, used to get together for big family picnics and "reunions" fairly regularly but we don't much anymore and that's a shame. More often than not, you don't get to see them unless it's a sad occasion like a funeral because everyone is pretty much married off and had their own babies. There were 9 Johnston siblings, there are 5 left and one of them lives in BC and the other one is ill in a nursing home. Today was the party for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary. The photo of the siblings showed three people. Other than my uncle Keith who is Dad's twin, all the other siblings are older, some in their 80's and as the family ages, the numbers start to dwindle.

Enough of that. The party was lovely! Loads and loads of people there, quite a few I didn't know as they were friends of the family. I know a number of my aunt's family as well and it's always a shock to see how much the children of my cousins and second cousins have grown since i saw them last, some of them 10 years ago! I took about 40 pictures and I can't say i'm overly impressed with the battery life taking all flash pics. It was flashing dead when i left. All the pictures were using the flash, there was a bit of using the zoom and the review, and the battery was down a little to start with . It wasn't quite that bad when i was taking photos outdoors, of course, without the flash. Just as well i've ordered a spare battery though. And maybe i wasn't letting it charge up long enough though the indicator was off which means it's finished charging. I suspect the optical image stabilizer probably uses more battery power too and i've been leaving that on all the time. I shall have to rethink that.

Yes. The party. A table full of party food plus more that was passed around. I mingled and ended up standing the whole two and a half hours that we were there. Lots of hugs, lots of memories. My cousin Barry read a speech in which he noted quite a few things that have changed since 1957. There's photos here but they won't be of much interest to non-family.

Road Trip

Further to Yesterday's post about the lottery tickets and scratch tickets, i cashed in my $14 total and got another ticket for Friday night and another scratch ticket. And won another $2.00! With little amounts like that, it's just as simple to get another ticket and see how long my luck runs. I have never gone past 3 tickets in a row counting the first paid one so i'm already one up, this being number 4.

Going to a meal tonight with my best friend J who's in town visiting for two days and then T and i are going to Moncton on the weekend to see her again there. We're leaving Friday night and coming back on Sunday and i've booked a lovely B&B, Archibald B&B. Off season rates of $65 for a room with private bathroom and breakfast, plus taxes. Pretty good. I was expecting about 100 a night.

I was doing some bouncing around in my web browser when all of a sudden the mouse started acting weirdly. It kept selecting areas of the page even though i only clicked the mouse, not "drag and selected" it. Every time i clicked on a link it would open a new window. I tried to get to the control panel but it kept selecting all the icons up to and including the one for the mouse. When i managed to get into the mouse settings, everything seemed correct. Couldn't reinstall because i don't have the disc. It was all very strange. Even a reboot didn't work and when i tried to do a system restore, i could open the application but buttons or links wouldn't click. only the X to close the app worked. Sheesh. I finally called my cousin to see if he had any ideas and i told him it was acting as if i was holding down the shift key but i wasn't. I looked down. The shift key looked like it was stuck in the.... down position! Uh. Yeah. dislodged a crumb of something or other and up it popped and the mouse now works fine. *slinks away*

One of my best friends, Jo, moved out to Edmonton a couple of summers ago and she's going to be visiting her family for the next couple of weeks up in New Brunswick. Turns out she's going to be making a trip down here to Halifax for a few days too so i'll definitely get to see her!!! The other of our "three musketeers" group, Tracey, is going to go up to NB the last saturday in March overnight to see her too and i might go then as well. I would have had to sleep on her sister's couch though and i don't think i should trouble my back with that but i think i'll take Tracey's suggestion to get a bed and breakfast, one she knows of that's good. So if i do go, that's the plan, depending on if i think my back will stand a 3 hour drive.

Ok, then. We went to a corrie ping this lunchtime. Graham said he was fine to go. He slept on the plane and slept some more here so was up and raring to go. Then we went to MOm's where there was a family get together so he could meet some of the family and i could show off.....
you may need sunglasses )

Oh and i must show you this year's birthday cartoon

brace yourself )

It's been a long day. I think we're going to relax tonight, maybe get a takeaway that we would have ordered last night had he arrived at a decent hour. We'll have a slow morning i think, and then Justin has offered to upgrade the car a bit as i'm not really that comfortable driving in the little one so we'll do that in the afternoon and browse around the shops. He's planning to get me a new easel for my birthday pressie so i don't have to hunch over the coffee table so we might suss that out, see what Kent has to offer at least. Hmm. Wonder if Wal-mart has them too. could run over there and check as well.

It was so nice to see every one that came to the party at Mom's. It felt like the papparazzi, there were so many cameras going off. I'll get them off the camera maybe in the morning and upload them to an album. Stay tuned.
tvordlj: (Movies)
Well not exactly. But we did go to see The Queen this afternoon and i gotta say, all the accolades Helen Mirren is getting are justified. She did a fabulous job. As most know, the movie focuses on the week between Diana Spencer's death and funeral and how the Royal Family did and did not react to it in the face of the grief that so much of the general public showed. I think it did surprise them all. the movie uses quite a lot of actual footage of Diana and of her brother and arrivals at the funeral. It did a good job of showing how out of touch the Royal Family was with the general feeling of the nation but aside from Philip, they don't come across as stuck up, just naive in their isolated world. I thought at the time that there was more contention between Charles and his mother but there wasn't much of that in the movie, he pretty much came across as cowed by her and very distant from her as a son which is, i believe, true anyway. He seemed inclined to make subtle attempts to rectify the situation behind her back, using his secretary to contact Blair. There was a rather ironic scene where the Queen is standing by a broken down vehicle and sees a magnificent 14 point stag that she knows is the object of a stalking party on the other side of the Scottish hills on Balmoral and in the end the stag is indeed shot by an unexpected source when it strayed off it's usual course. You could draw parallels.

Anyway, the performances were fantastic. Michael Sheen is nearly a dead ringer for Tony Blair and Helen McCrory plays his wife Cherie with gleeful irreverence. James Crawford makes a very believable Prince Philip right down to the cold and austere arrogance he is known to possess. Even Alex Jennings' portrayal of Prince Charles is probably very spot on. We both enjoyed the movie quite a bit and i do hope she wins the award tomorrow night. It's pretty cool, she's already won awards for playing Elizabeth I in a mini series last year for tv and a few awards already for Elizabeth II. Not many actors get recognition in the same year for roles where the characters are actually related to each other, 400 years apart.

Before the movie, we had brunch in Gatsby's on Spring Garden Road and i had a wonderful Eggs Benedict with Caesar Salad and after we went for a tea. Tomorrow i want to do some cooking for the freezer and get some space cleared in the closet and dresser and get some cleaning done. Where he's arriving on Saturday and i work all week, there's really no time to do it all.

Aww i had a call from my best friend last night. She just got back from 10 days in London visiting her daughter who is living and working in Islington. It was very hard to leave, she said, and she misses her daughter very much but it's great to be able to picture where she is and the daughter is quite happy there. She's getting ready to go to Ireland to work there for 6 months though she's not sure she really wants to on one hand because she's got a good gig going where she is now. She gets 150 quid a week but she doesn't have to pay rent and food is included too as she's living over a pub. She's hooked on the theatre and can get around the city like a native already. She is a bit homesick and does find that she feels a bit anonymous in such a large city. She's still not sure what she wants to do with her future and wonders if she's not using this 2 year opportunity to avoid things since all her friends are now in uni. I think it was far smarter for her to take the time off, get the chance to live somewhere new and travel before settling down rather than paying for university and then wasting it because it wasn't what she wanted to do. She probably could get this job back when her work visa for Ireland is up in November. She would still have 6 months left on her work visa for the UK.

Anyway, she had her mom's trip all organized and they did stuff every day and saw Mamma Mia and Wicked which also included getting up at 6 a.m. the day after she arrived to go stand in Leicester Square for same day tickets. All part of the experience! Jo also found out that you should ask for "filter" coffee because the coffee shop she went to one morning for a boost gave her the equivalent of somewhat watered down esspresso which had her buzzing and her eyes like saucers all day! She also discovered that Starbucks is very very expensive lol Then again, that was a coffee, a hot chocolate and muffins at the kiosk in Leicester Square. What would you expect? Starbucks is expensive anyway no matter where you are and i don't find their coffee that great.

They had a day trip to Oxford, walked the upper level of Tower Bridge, saw the Crown Jewels, went to service in St. Paul's and saw Westminster Abbey. She liked St. Paul's better, thought the Abbey was awfully crowded inside, smaller than it looked because of all the "stuff". She finally got to go to Past Times, having seen the catalogues and gifts that i've brought back over the years and timed it right because she got stuff on sale! Oddly though, there doesn't seem to be any branches in London anymore, not even in Heathrow.

Now she's got to figure out how to get the photos out of the digital camera and online somewhere. I can hardly wait to see them!

A Big Fat Happy Birthday to my mate, upcoming horror novelist, [livejournal.com profile] naturalbornkaos.... Pint!

I had a lovely phone call tonight with an old friend from Liverpool. He is another one of my corrie chat room friends that found his true love in the irc chat room. They got married last summer and he's in the process of doing the paperwork to apply for sponsored immigration to Canada. I think it's been a couple of years since we've had a chat so that was a nice surpirse.

Just watching Cracker with Robbie Coltrane, a new one from last year. I do so love that show! Pretty neat too, because it was filmed in Manchester and i recognize quite a few locations and buildings!
tvordlj: (Word of the day)
I think i need a new back. It's not gone wonky on me but it usually does have an ache in the morning no matter how i sleep on it, some mornings more than others and for some reason, i was very wakeful last night. Tossing and turning and very warm which is probably what kept waking me up. You just can't win! If i sleep in one position most of the night, it aches. If i toss and turn, it aches. It loosens up through the day, just in time to go to bed again. I think i will get in for an adjustment today, though and i really think i may call [livejournal.com profile] oceannadelamer for an aromatherapy massage soon.

Having lunch with [livejournal.com profile] blueberrymoon today! I bought one of her paintings, the one of a VW bug, and she's personally delivering it :) My best friend loves those cars and her husband bought her a 1959 Bug for Christmas so when i saw the painting i had to get it for her. Her birthday is in March. I don't think i can wait until Christmas to give it to her though i would like to wait. It's great when Christmas presents really have that "Oh Wow!" factor but i probably will be too excited to give it to her to wait that long. That same friend is flying to London tonight to visit her daughter who's working there on a Student's Working Abroad program. She's really excited as it's her first time there plus has really missed her daughter who's been gone since September. Said daughter is having a grand old time, taking day trips on her days off, seeing lots of musicals and plays and she even joined the American Choir and sang in St. Paul's Cathedral for the American Thanksgiving last November!

Word of the Day: Star-gazers. In 1889, that word was a slang word for "ladies of the pavement who walk by night, not so much, however, to study the heavenly bodies as to dispose of their own". This is also the feast day of St. Vitalis who, according to legend, spent any extra money he earned on the star-gazers. But not what you'd think! He'd engage them and then pray for them in their rooms. Allegedly. I don't know if that included exclamations of Oh God!!!!!
