Hurricane Earl whooshed through town earlier today leaving a mess of downed tree branches and power outages in its wake. It didn't feel so bad to me but that's because i'm in a brick apartment building and the wind wasn't buffeting my side of the building. I can certainly see the wind and rain outside but it didn't feel so bad from inside. However, there were a lot of power outages and a lot of trees and branches down. The weather was pretty wild for awhile. My power only flickered a couple of times and by about 2:30 i thought i was home free. The storm had passed, the rain had stopped, the skies were sort of clearing. Still a bit of wind but it was over for all intents and purposes.

And then my power went out.

Bastard.

And it wasn't just a flicker this time so i decided to go have a little nap. I'd be up since 7:30 so i drifted off for a couple of hours but by 5:30 and 6 it still was out. I made a sandwich and had a drink and lit a candle in the windowless kitchen. And though i did have a magazine, i was still bored and the apartment wasn't cooled down a whole lot. Turns out my mom had power and a cool breeze so i decided to come out here for the night. Cool breeze, lights, internet, company, no brainer! Especially the cool breeze! The power company line said my area probably won't have the power restored until tomorrow morning. It may be on earlier but they're not going to say that. They probably gave the same estimated time for everyone that calls!

I followed the hurricane coverage mainly through the Haligonia.ca feeds on facebook and twitter and on their website. They did a good job of pooling all the information in one place. It's funny, hurricane season starts in the late spring but we only seem to get the worst storms in the fall. Hurricane Juan was the end of September. this wasn't nearly as bad as that one was, it was only just a hurricane category 1 and often it was only a strong tropical storm. They determine it by the speed of the wind. Juan was a 1 but the damage it wreaked was like a 2 or even a 3. It sure sounded worse too. One thing i did notice is that there was no thunder and lightning, not at my end of the city at least. That's unusual. Juan was crashing and banging and flashing for an hour or more.

Glad to hear everyone & everything is safe and sound.

I remember a couple tropical storms growing up in NS, but don't recall any actual hurricanes. You've 2 now in recent memory. Wow.

There was at least on hurricane i remember back in the 70s. Downtown Dartmouth flooded! I think we get tropical storms almost regularly, at least once a year most years, during this season. Mostly we just get the tail end of them as they blow out to sea. It's happening more i think because our temperatures are getting warmer

Hurricaine Earl and such

Hi, my name is Tracy. I am a Texan but married my husband Scott the day before Hurricane Juan in our front yard right across from Point Pleasant Park. (We lived in the last house on the left). What an awesome day that was not only for the occasion but also for the weather. We had numerous wedding pictures taken in our front yard, in the park and by the shoreline . I had spent many an hour walking our dog, alone or with my new family, and even more time running loop after loop in the park. We have a similar park here in Houston, but no hills and in the summer, well it’s just too hot! After the storm, my stepson and I went into the park to view the damage and see the altered shoreline, (and I to say a prayer) but alas my husband could not bear the thought and I could understand. He was as devastated as the park. I was so concerned when I heard Earl was approaching and I am glad to know that the devastation to the park and the city was ‘minimal’ (ok in comparison). Being a veteran of many hurricanes here in the Gulf Coast Area, most recently Ike, I feel for you and your beautiful city to which I had the privilege of living for almost a year.

Take good care of you and your lovely city. I hope restoration goes smoothly.

Thanks for your story. Yes, Point Pleasant Park was so sad to see after Juan. It's still bare but slowly regenerating as the years go by. It'll never be the same, i don't think.

hi Tracy. I am Tvor's sister.
It took me years before I was able to go back to Point Pleasant Park.
It was a place that I went to often as a teenager. There were also a few spots that were my 'secret' spots..no more I will say on that!
When I eventually went back...it made me cry.
Same as in the middle of our city..Public Gardens. I love that place too and it was quite a mess..old old trees down.
The radio said the other day..before, during and after Earl, that Juan entered into Halifax as a hurricane 2 and quickly dropped to a 1..but one can see the difference between Juan and Earl. All I know is..I would NEVER want to experience a full on 2 or worse..it only gave us an idea of what Ike or Katrina was like.

the radio and the weather network said Juan came in at a 2..and then went down to a 1.
