I've been mainly acquiring dvd's to replace my favourite movies or add favourites to my collection. I haven't bought very many recent movies on dvd other than Gosford Park, Bridget Jones, Talented Mr. Riply and Almost Famous. Some from the 90's and 80's and i think the oldest movie i have on dvd is either All About Eve or The Quiet Man. Without looking it up i seem to remember both were released around the same time, 1950. (not on dvd obviously) I just got three more from Columbia House, the mail order place, LadyHawke, Breakfast at Tiffany's and the Lion in Winter.

I never hardly ever bought video tapes of my favourites oddly enough. I only have a small number including Labyrinth, the Commitments, Gone with the Wind, Blast from the Past, Tequila Sunrise and Shirley Valentine. Haven't been able to find Shirley or the Commitments on dvd, it has to be north american format because my player won't play international and the one in the pc will only let me switch formats up to 5 times then it stays at the last one i changed it so i am not going to chance that.

When the time comes to get a new tv i'll likely get a new dvd player with it, with all the bells and whistles. Maybe a dvd-vcr combo might even be good. My tv isn't stereo so i don't get quite the sound i could but it's ok for most movies. I have the dvd rom in the computer if i need to play something that needs to have stereo sound, like a music dvd.

Not sure if this is helpful..

Yes we can get combo players here too. But the dvd player i have is only about 9 months old and the tv, though oldish, is still working quite well so i can't justify new :)

So many things to spend money on... LOL I think my next major-ish purchase will be a digital camera.

Fans? LOL! Well my scanner will be glad of the occaisional break! I have to say my HP scanner is quite a workhorse. I thought i'd get a 2 mega pixel one, just good enough for printing 4x6 photos or putting photos on the web/email. The prices of them are down and i've been looking at the flyers lately, comparing prices.

We too have a combination VHS/DVD player. Gad, we wouldn't have known WHAT to do with Tim's VHS movie collection otherwise ;-) I wonder if you could have your existing movies made into DVDs if all else fails? There most be someone who can do that.

As for a digital camera - I am sure you would love it, the way you travel around. Instant development and no more scanning :) And you can take thirty pictures of the same thing if you want and not have to worry about development costs. Awesome!

Oh i can't see ever wanting to give up my SLR for digital, messing around with having to keep the batteries charged, downloading, making sure i have extra smart cards etc. i think i'd get more use out of a digi just for odds and sods rather than all my travel photos. i still love to sit down with an album and look and if i ended up having to print most of the digi pics i took it would end up being more expensive than developing photos. Most of my photos that i take turn out so i can't say i ruin very many.
