Feb. 8th, 2016 08:41 amSnow watch.
First big winter storm of the season approaching. Seems pretty likely we'll be under a blanket by tomorrow. No snow day today though the schools are already closed in anticipation. Fair enough since they have to worry about getting the kids home safely. A lot of the schools put the kids on school busses and the driving is going to be quite bad. They don't know when the worse part will be, though. They're expecting it to start midday but the worst might not be until this evening and overnight. I get stessed about it, with the thought of trying to get home but it sounds so far like it will be messy but not insurmountable. I always worry what I'll do if they pull the busses of the roads before we get to leave. I think in recent years, though, they are more likely to let us go before it gets too bad. They have also started delaying the start of the work day or even giving us the day off if it's very bad in the morning or has been overnight, in order that there's less traffic on the road for the plows to clear. They never used to do that.
I would still be willing to use up a vacation day if i felt it was too difficult but i haven't had to do that in a couple of years. They won't let us work from home (unless of course, they need us to do something from home after hours) so it's them that loses out when there's no productivity. I suppose though, aside from the IT department where almost all of us have laptops and the work we do we can do from anywhere, most of the corporation can't do that. Either they're dealing with the public or they don't have the mobility.
Ah well. It is what it is. We'll see what tomorrow is like. I expect it might be a bit difficult getting home whether we are let out early or not but I'll get there eventually.
I had a friend pick me up and we went over to Walmart yesterday. I was looking for my mother's birthday gift and wanted to pick up a few groceries. Ended up getting the gift somewhere else but when we tried to go to Costco, the parking lot was heaving full and even after driving around it a couple of times, there were no spots to park. I think drivers were following people who were leaving the store to return to their parking spots to claim them once they were empty! We gave up. That store is always crazy busy even on weekdays. You have to get there really early.
Didn't do anything else on the weekend. Mostly my weekends are pretty quiet, with just household stuff, catching up on recorded tv, maybe a shopping run with Mom. Once Graham moves here, I would expect we'll get out on the bus more on the weekend, maybe to a movie more than I go now. I know Mom will lend us the car now and then on the weekend and we can go for drives. There are lots of nice places to go for an afternoon out that aren't more than an hour or hour and a half away. We can even go for an overnight trip somewhere. It won't matter what we do or don't do. It'll just be nice to finally be together, knowing one of us doesn't have to get on an airplane in two weeks!
