So today in the news....
Jul. 18th, 2003 08:21 amThe Canadian Government has introduced a bill to legalize same sex marriages. They'll take it to the Supreme Court to make sure there are no loopholes and word it so that churches can decline to perform the ceremonies if they so wish. They will have an open vote in Parliament but expect it will pass without difficulty, making Canada the third country in the world to recognize same sex marriages. People are warning citizens from the US, however, that if they come north to get married, they may have to move here for a year to get divorced!
There's to be a provincial election in about a month so the bullshit factor in the newspaper has increased significantly and the large and small coloured signs are blooming on lawns and green spaces all over the province. I've already had a call from the Liberal party candidate asking if i am decided on who and reminding me of the leadership debate on the 22nd on CBC. Last election i was on strike. The incumbent from the NDP party couldn't get away from my door fast enough but the Liberal candidate, a local media celeb Frank Cameron made a few phone calls *and* got back to me even though he had no updated info for me. *That's* the kind of person i vote for. This time around... who knows yet.
There's a preservation Trust for the Bluenose II schooner, an icon for Nova Scotia. The head of the trust is suing a company for using the Bluenose image on souvenirs. The company is fighting back. They've been in business 27 years. The trust only 5 but is a non profit trust which registered the schooner's image so that the proceeds of souvenirs will raise money to maintain the popular Schooner.
A postal strike has been delayed by a last minute offer. The clock is still ticking.
Corrections Canada has confiscated dozens of computers from prisoners after discovering they are being used to create fake id, lander money, other tech crimes and then there's the pornography aspect. This isn't a common room with computers, these are computers right in their cells! What the heck did they think convicted criminals would do with a computer? Why even bother incarcerating them if they're going to give them all the amenities of a comfortable and priveledged life? Isn't prison supposed to be a punishment?
Bush and Blair are continuing to defend their decision to invade Iraq. no brainer. They aren't going to admit they made a mistake no matter how much evidence shows up that contradicts their original excuses for doing it. In the meantime, their military continues to be attacked, injured and killed in Iraq by guerrilla warfare. When's the next election?
