Murder Most Horrid
Aug. 3rd, 2003 12:31 pmLine of the Day: Richard to Emily “You’ll get your reward in Heaven” (sooner than later he hoped) Aidan “A butcher and a butcher’s boy, ‘Bubble and Squeak’” (indeed!) Steve (you expected this one I know) “Attila the Hun couldn’t control my wife”. And Fred “If you’ve come to take him away, you’ll have to come through me” (a formidable task indeed, Fred in a state of protective father lion).
Have we all caught our collective breath? Well let’s begin.
I thought it inconsistent that Richard showed a bit of nerves early in the day, shaking hands doing up Gail’s clasp and retching a bit after the first blow. Are we supposed to think he has a conscience and regrets? He proceeded to put his plan in motion with cool calculation and the day after, he was cheerfully offering the police cups of coffee and redirecting their inquiries towards Aidan right on cue. Not a nerve rattling then, not a nightmare like he had after he did in Patricia. Prior to all this he coldly and calculatedly tried to victimize Audrey and burn her in her bed without a qualm and that was just as cold blooded as whacking Emily and Maxine in the head.
But back to the events. Nice heavy footprints using Aidan’s trainers, broken fence (why bother putting it back together?) and crack open the back door. Where was the crowbar? It wasn’t in his hands. I suppose it was under his coat but where? Maybe it was up his own.. well never mind that. Rifle through belongings and grab some cd’s and dvd’s. It’s amazing Emily did survive, he really came down hard on her head, not nearly as hard as he seemed to hit Maxine. Pretty gross that edit to the pub with someone carving a roast of something. Make sure everyone sees you in the crowded pub and slyly point the police to Aidan who did Richard a favour by staggering into the pub and picking fights, especially with Ashley. Then Peter also helped as he had noticed a suspicious light in the old DIY shop before. Hide the bottle so its contents can’t be traced. What about stray hairs in Aidan’s cap? What about the fact that there won’t be any fingerprints on the murder weapon? What about the fact that there will be diazepam in Aidan’s bloodstream? One or two loopholes that could be Richard’s undoing.
There really wasn’t very much blood at all for a double bludgeoning was there. I suppose the murder was bad enough, showing blood splattered walls and puddles of it was just a bit too much for Corrie. It’s not, after all, Eastenders, as much as they try to be like them. When Ashley walked in to the house it really looked like he'd been pole-axed. I’m astonished that Norris wouldn’t have gone straight to Emily to check if she was still alive. That is a huge oversight. No matter how shocked he would have been, he would have checked a lot sooner than he did, and even then only checked because she moaned. And I really don’t think the police would normally have handcuffed a man obviously in shock and docile in order to lead him out of the house when one PC already mentioned it looked like a break in. Curiously when all this was going on and the crowd was gawping, Richard looked scared to bits even before he heard that Emily was still alive as they were wheeling her into the ambulance.
Would they really let two friends sit in ICU all night when Toyah had to pretend to be Emily’s niece the next day? Why would Richard want to take the kids to and from school for a few days. Ok the media but he implied to Gail that there could be danger from the killer on the loose so wouldn’t that scare the kids more instead of less? Did Joshua get his rabbit in the end? Would a proper solicitor really allow the police to badger Ashley like they did for so long? And talk about being put in an impossible situation. Aidan wants Ken as his advisor. Ken? Ken?? This man has been through career busting hell at the hands of Aidan. I’m sure his morals, social responsibility and inner teacher put up quite a battle against his prejudice and resentment towards the lad. Even if Aidan refused a youth offending officer, could they legally question him without proper legal representation?
Ashley talking to the sleeping baby on his lap at the end about Maxine with her picture looking over their shoulders… *that’s* the scene that did me in. *sob*
After all that it’s hardly worth commenting on the rest of the show is it? Well if you insist. Doreen’s cake in the shape of 50 and all those balloons. Might as well accept the 50 candles after all that. All those young people in the pub and who does Todd sit with mainly besides Candice and Sarah? His mother, his girlfriend’s parents, and assorted other parental generation types. Maybe Aidan was right. Two old women having birthdays! I guess Dev’s staff meeting didn’t include any of the drivers. Isn’t he being ignorant and obnoxious? He’s not sticking his oar in , it’s more the size of a telephone pole! I doubt very much Steve is going to be able to mark his cards or sic Karen on him to have any effect at all. Ciaran offers to extend his leave to help expand the caff. Would that be indefinitely? Isn’t that called AWOL? Tracy was quite possibly THE most useless barmaid in barmaid history! Clearly she’s just riding on the patronage coattails looking for easy money with no work involved. She may have twisted Peter’s arm to get Shelly to hire her but Fred is the owner in the end and if Shelly hadn’t sacked her, Fred would have.
Well things have hotted up now. Richard has, in my opinion, reached the point of no return. He’ll get his comeuppance and his family will have to deal with the horror and fallout. There’s no redeeming him now.

Excellent episodes, I agree.
