Line of the Day: Richard: “Of course we’ll be missed. Law abiding(!) upstanding neighbours like us?

Richard about all his detractors “They’ve lost and I’ve won… I mean we’ve won” (oops!)

Richard “You know , Gail, this party’s been quite an eye opener” (for her and all!)

Richard again, about Patricia’s death, “And killing her made it easier to think about killing again” (shudder)

Gail “You think your dad running away with another woman is worse than killing someone with a crowbar!!!”

It’s a long one today, you may need a cuppa for this one.

Let’s get the minor stuff out of the way first, shall we? Too bad Fred had such a hard time coming to terms with the news about Joshua but I’m glad Martin made a point to tell Fred how it feels to raise kids not biologically yours. Seems to have done the trick. What a nice gesture for Fred to move into the house with Ashley. God, I just had a horrible thought. I hope Joshua doesn’t end up as bubble brained as Maxine. He doesn’t have Ashley’s sensible and kind dna to fall back on! I bet it takes him awhile to learn to walk. Any child of Dr. Fisher Price is bound to be a weeble wobbling around LOL! And now there’s a good expression for it being cold out, “By eck it’s a bit parky out there!”

It’s understandable that Aidan might think Sarah gave him the spiked vodka or one of her friends. If the police know about the drugs, though, why is it taking so long for them to tell Ashley about new evidence? They’ve known for a few days at least.

Quite an awkward little dinner party wasn’t it? I have to say Tracy had a point about burying the hatchet and fresh starts. It’s been a couple of months and in the interest of building bridges with their daughter, Ken and Deirdre might have had more manners and Shelley being a barmaid, you'd think she'd be better at keeping the party going and being a good hostess. Dev at least had the sense to eat and run.

Question, if the police have a big heavy piece of digging equipment, why would they set an officer to dig with a shovel? Besides, Patricia is buried under cement in the foundation supports.

Bits… Bethany’s chatting a storm, did you hear her at the breakfast table that morning and saying “morning” to Todd’s greeting as well as giggling at someone off screen! Rosie wants a mobile phone. Sounds like she’s growing up. Joshua had some baby fingernail scratches on his face in one shot of him sleeping. Fred planning to sing “What shall we do with a drunken sailor” as Joshua’s lullaby. Now *that’s* my kind of lullaby ;) Didn’t Audrey get to Gail’s fast? And all that happened and Audrey got there even before the pub closed! The kids sure went to bed early! Shelley Unwin did “drunk” very well didn’t she? And hungover as well lol

All right. Clue 1: Richard wishing the bail hostel was cancelled earlier and his relief of financial pressures. Audrey tells Gail that Richard was after Emily for the money. Gail’s face after she ejected Audrey was about disbelief rather than anger but some of that was about Sarah visiting Aidan in jail Clue 2: The diazepam in Aidan’s blood and Richard’s access to Audrey’s sleeping tablets. Clue 3: Karen mentioning the bracelet, Gail was remembering then I think about Patricia’s friend telling them it was P’s bracelet and Richard covering. Then she overheard Steve say how Richard found it, exposing Richard’s lies. Clue 4: Audrey confirming her medication was diazepam and that she left it behind. Gail later remembers seeing Richard with it the day of the murder. Clue 5: Richard paled at Ashley’s sudden appearance in the pub. Clue 6: Gail returns to Richard’s remarks about the bail hostel and it all comes together.

Wasn’t Richard’s speech in the pub bizarre considering the circumstances?

When Richard finally admitted that he killed Maxine he truly looked haunted yet he looked as if he had really wanted to be able to tell her, or tell someone and it was a relief to let it out. Yet he couldn’t stand to have Gail think him mercenary so continued to lie and say he was only setting up Aidan to go down for robbery. If that was the case, why did he have a crowbar with him? As Gail pointed out, he could have done it later when everyone was in bed. And man oh man didn’t she connect with his face? I don’t think Brian Capron expected her to hit him as hard as she did!

The ensuing scenes were really frightening weren’t they? Richard twists in the wind, trying everything, guilt especially even threatening suicide. Gail really touched the last nerve when she realized he can’t have kids and wanted a ready made family. The Norman Bates line was probably meant to break the tension a bit but I thought it was very much out of place though the stuff leading up to it was perfect (about him being sick and twisted). Paraphrasing some of what Richard said to Gail here, this speech had the hair on my neck standing up “I’ve killed for you! Did Brian, Martin ever love you that much? They betrayed you with their seedy little affairs but I'd never do that to you! You’ll never find anyone who loves you more than me!” It was terrifying hearing him talking about stopping people for getting in their way and hoping Gail can just put it behind them because he promises it will never happen again!

When she finally said it was over there was a moment, frozen in time, when I and Gail thought he really would actually do something to her, did you see the subtle changes in their faces? Now *that’s* acting! It was broken by Bethany’s cries and he left, she collapsed in horror and called her mother in desperation. Martin’s reaction, with anger and rage, was spot on and Audrey found the right mix of support, didn’t rub Gail’s face in it, knowing it wouldn’t do any good anyway. (We’ll leave that for Norris, shall we? I think he’s going to be insufferable this next few weeks). I’m not surprised Gail started making excuses for Richard the next day. How *could* you get your mind around it all? The shock must have been devastating. The final scene, when the police announced they found Patricia’s body was the final nail in Richard’s coffin.
