Everyone around me is hacking up lungs and sneezing and if i manage to get out of this province on the plane on Friday unscathed it will be a bleedin miracle! Off to see the doctor tonight, will ask her about a flu shot. They have free ones at work but i will not be here when they do our floor.

Bought my friend Karen's son Jack a NS tshirt at noon and bought myself a canvas NS tote bag. I decided to take it on board in addition to the wheely carryon because in business class you are allowed an extra "business" type piece and though this isn't very briefcase-y, it's lighter than my soft sided briefcase which looks ridiculous considering it's filled with books, soaps, candles and gift bags. Might switch to my smaller purse, smaller wallet so it's not so heavy. Have decided to just take my smaller Olympus camera this time. Don't expect to need the wider angle or macro closeup capabilities of my Canon.

Am mostly packed. Can't fit in my dress, the one karen wants me to wear for her birthday dinner with her girl pals. But if i am taking the canvas bag, i might be able to put it in there, rolled up. Can iron it out there.

Well i have to find a way to the airport on Friday morning. I have to be there by about 6 - 6:15 and the airport bus doesn't start running until 8! What bloody good is that! A taxi is $36 which is not as much as i thought it would be. Oh well. i'm on vacation, what the hey.

Doctor appointment: Blood tests... liver counts down again. Cat scan... didn't tell us any more than we already knew or suspected (this "fatty" liver thing). She is hoping the specialist can tell us if that's the only thing that is causing the numbers to play yoyo or if we're missing something. Shall probably get a flu shot, they are giving them out at work.

If you had a chance to see the Shattered City, about the lead up to , the explosion and the aftermath, you'll likely have been as moved as i was and i've lived with the stories all my life. The portrayal was grim and it was just like that, and worse. People buried under buildings, people that went missing, people blinded by flying glass. Halifax pulled itself up by it's bootstraps, staggering, to rebuild, to go on because you have to. The scars are still there if you know where to look. And then people seem surprised that we are so willing to help others, do whatever it takes when air crashes like Swiss Air 111 happen, or when all those travelers were diverted here after Sept. 11, even things as small as sharing barbeques to make tea for the neighbours when the power was out for days after the hurricane. After Dec 6, 1917, (our own personal "day of infamy") people from all over the world came to our aid. Boston might have been the first but they weren't the last. We have had many lifetimes to return the favour whenever we can. We survived.
