Psychology of smell
Mar. 4th, 2006 03:58 pmI put on some body lotion today that i'd been given for Christmas. It's the first time i used it and the smell of it instantly reminded me of a trip i took to Vancouver and Victoria. Not the most recent one but the trip in 2000 i'm pretty sure. I don't know what it is about it, but something i smelled or bought on that trip has the same ingredient. The label says it has marine algae in it which sounds horrible doesn't it? lol! It smells lovely and i kind of think i bought this oversized teabag looking thing while i was out there that had the same smell. Only it isn't a teabag, it's to put in your bath water to make it smell nice. I bet one of the dried flowers or something in that is also in this.
Smells can instantly remind you of things, bring back long forgotten memories even faster than, say, a piece of music which often does it for me as well. Smells are more instantaneous though, i find. The scent of Old Spice or Aqua Velva, both fairly inexpensive after shave lotions that you can get in the drug store always remind me of my dad because we always bought him those for Christmas with our meager savings and he always used it when he shaved on Saturday night before going out to bowling or when he'd dress up to go somewhere.
today is housework catch up day, dishes, bathroom scrubbing, laundry. There are other things i should do of course but those were the most pressing. Mom and i are going to Chapters tomorrow afternoon for a browse in the bookshelves.
6 sleeps until i go to Toronto. I'll count the sleeps to UK after i get back :)))
