Ladies and gentlemen, according to Nova Scotia's Minster for Health, "Political promises do not count unless they are put in writing". He's just outed every politician in existence. Of course we all know, or should know, that to be the truth but nobody wants you to think about it during an election, do they? Those of you that have naive visions of honest politicians who will do or try very hard to do what they promise during a campaign have had those dreams shattered.

The origin of this has to do with the last Provincial election where one of the candidates for a riding in the Annapolis Valley promised to build a nursing home locally. He didn't get elected and now the residents want to know when they're going to get their nursing home. Well the elected MLA didn't make that promise so he's prevaricating. Yes, we know you didn't make the promise but why can't we have it anyway? So he's ducking and dodging the issue with not so great aplomb!

Nova Scotia politicians seem to be in hot water a lot lately. The Minister for Social Services is deemed to be technically the legal guarding of a teenage girl who has been in the custody of the Social at least half of her life. She needs mental health treatment that is not really available here and she keeps running away from custody and group homes and foster homes. The poor girl is in trouble and nobody seems able to help her so a judge ordered the Minister, as her legal guarding, to appear at the next hearing. The Minister is digging her heels in and fighting the order. Another MLA made a private call to the judge and is being lynched for conflict of interest and all sorts of other evil things. Meanwhile the hearing Monday has been delayed because the teen, who was on the run, was taken back in to custody and is in court today.

Then there's the MP Peter MacKay who made a veiled reference to his ex girlfriend, MP Belinda Stronach, likening her to a dog. Now, he didn't actually utter the words, but when someone in the House asked him where his dog was, he referred to her empty chair and said "you (the Liberals) already have her". Oooohhh! That remark has been ..er.. dogging him ever since and I think it's going to follow him the rest of his career. (See, they were members of the same Conservative party and she sold out, crossed the floor to the Liberals who were running the minority government during a crucial vote. Peter didn't know anything about it until it was revealed in the media or on the House floor and felt very betrayed and bitter, as witnessed in an interview on his home farm with his loyal dog by his side, as opposed to his disloyal one!)

As you were.
