I left the house about 11, it was overcast and cool but I thought i'd take a chance on the weather and go over to watch the Pride parade. I got there quite early, grabbed a tea in Starbucks and got a prime spot on the library wall. And waited. I thought the parade would start about 12:30 and get to the library about 1. It didn't get there until after 2! By that time my bum and legs were hurting from the concrete wall but i stood for awhile and sat for awhile, back and forth. Good thing was, the sun came out full blast! Bad thing was...i did not put on sunscreen! Am a nice glowy pink tonight.

The parade was great! Lots of colour, lots of creative costumes, great music. I have only been to one other Pride parade and it was time to go again. I love it! It's so full of vivid colours, originality, and everyone is so happy! Most parades are all about the performances... bands, baton twirling, clowns entertaining and yes, groups of people waving from floats. But Pride is just all out there and everyone is out to have a good time, all ages, all cultures. Dogs are trimmed with rainbow collars, neckerchiefs and I even saw one pooch in a pink feather boa. Fabulous! The crowd calls out to the people in the parade and they call right back. The drag queens strut their stuff and pose for endless photos. I don't know how they manage the whole route on those heels. Even with practice it must be hard!

Eventually i made my way up Spring Garden Road to where my nephew Justin was watching and stayed for the rest of the duration with him and his friends. I had planned to go over to an outdoor carnival type thing where there would be music and games and booths and crafts but because of the no-sunscreen thing, i figured i had better leave while i still had some skin left. Plus it was bloody hot and i was wearing jeans though at least a sleeveless top. Too bad, there was a band i had hoped to hear, called The Cliks. They were on a float in the parade and i'd heard about them in the paper this week. Their claim to fame is their lead singer, a female-to-male transgender person. They're from Toronto and they're pretty good from the bit i've heard. I found their website and watched/listened to the video there and i like that too so i think i may go in search of some music by them.

Pictures? Why of course there are pictures. Over here on Facebook. I have some on Flickr but they're the same ones and not quite as many. I like to put my favourites and/or best ones on Flickr. Anyway, either/or if you want to have a look. Behind the cut are a couple of highlights.

It's all about the boots! )

We have a dancing MacPass. Yes, really! Halifax has two toll bridges, the MacDonald and the MacKay. The pass is a square yellow thingy that is attached to the front centre of the windshield (windscreen) and it's scanned at the toll booths. Your bank account or credit card is then charged for whatever you used that month. We thought the dancing MacPass was er... amusing.
Shortly after that, a coffin drifted by with a flag across the roof and it was followed by the Halifax Goff community. My nephew was a bit "wtf?" but hey, the Goths have Pride too yannow!
The other clip in the vid was a float with everyone playing drums and tom toms.
