There are a few people on FB this week talking about what they were doing 10 years ago and pointing to LJ entries for that date in that year.  I just looked back to mine and though the one for today's date was a bit cryptic, explained in the comments, the ones for the next couple of days brought back lovely memories. I was in the first flush of new love with a man i hadn't even met face to face yet. Both of us amazed that it really could happen online without that contact. Was it real? It felt like it. I never felt like that with past relationships. We really connected and though it was all online at that point, we also had no choice but to "talk" and really get to know each other. Still, it's difficult at first to figure out if it's a crush or the real thing. It didn't feel like a crush. I had had those with online and real life men over the years as well.

In the early days of long distance relationships, all you had were letters and expensive phone calls. It would take a week or more to get a reply to your letter and the other person had to make sure to comment and answer what you'd written or there wouldn't be much in the way of true interaction. Being online, whether in a chat room, or instant messaging, you have actual, immediate conversations that answer and share information, go off on tangents, get silly, get serious, the whole gamut. You have to have that trust that they're as honest with you as you are with them and they are the person they're making themselves out to be.

Here we are 10 years later, with, of course, many face to face visits, and we know each other pretty well. We are now planning a wedding for next year. It likely would have happened before now but one major factor was his father who hasn't been in great health the past few years and, as you know, passed away last month. With any luck on the immigration front, he could be living here by the end of next year or early 2016.
