Oct. 17th, 2014 08:26 amI had to go to a little local convenience store to pick up a UPS parcel yesterday. Now, my local corner shop/convenience store is nothing special, nothing to write home about. It's a bit drab and dull and old. It doesnt' have a coffee corner, it doesn't have magazines or dvds (not anymore) and though there used to be takeout food there, pizzas, donairs etc, it's been gone a long time and only the counter with the space behind it used for storage is there. But the one i went into to get the parcel was appalling! I wouldn't have been surprised to see little living creatures huddling along the baseboards or skittering across into the corners. It was grubby, dirty, didn't have a lot of stuff on the shelves, not like my local shop which is, at least, consistently stocked, neat and orderly. Behind the cash counter, it looked like an old storage closet, cramped and just nasty. I can tell you, I felt like washing my hands when I left there.
The middle aged man working there seemed nice enough, not overly friendly and a bit vague like he wasn't sure he knew what he was doing. He had the UPS parcels stored in an old ice cream freezer but seemed a bit tentative using the software to look things up and record pick up. I thought he probably didn't have occasion to do it much but there seemed to be a number of parcels in the storage bin.
I can't imagine he makes a lot of money from the shop itself and it's across the street from another one that does, or at least used to, rent out movies. Being a UPS Agent and also a Western Union agent is probably how he supplements things. Overall, very unimpressed but I got my package. I didn't look at it closely but I don't recall seeing Amazon on the box which is usually well marked so it probably was from one of their resellers. I never choose courier delivery if i can get away without it, mainly because using Canada Post is cheaper and usually free even if it takes a few extra days. The only other one i've had experience with is Purolator and they have a proper depot in the industrial park which is a nuisance to get to but at least is their own office with the staff in uniforms and everything.
Got my hair trimmed after work yesterday by a new stylist in a different salon. The young woman i had been using moved away. The last cut i had i just took whoever was free. This time I went to the shop closer to my office tower because they had that happy hour special that was just the wash and dry thing. Anyway I had a basic cut with the Asian woman that took my appointment earlier and she sighed and tutted over my hair which, she said, was longer on one side than the other. You could see it was over the ears but I have no idea if the rest of it was that uneven. I'm pretty sure hair doesn't grow faster on one side of your head than another though so i'm sure she knew what she was talking about. Never mind. "I fix" she said and proceeded to. I do like the end results. My hair is short and there's not a particular style to it but if it isn't cut well, when it does start to grow out you can tell. We'll see how it fares. I may go back to her again. The salon is a bit more basic than the other one which has been renovated, and is shiny and has a bank of tablets set up for customers while you're waiting for your hair dye to cook or your perm to set. This one is more basic but has a lot more variety of hair products for sale and it's also where i always get my pedicures. They also have a couple of stand up tanning booths which i've used once or twice.
I don't know what I"m going to do with my hair for the wedding. I'm not putting anything in it or on it like a veil or flowers so i suppose i'll just have it styled. I'd like to have my makeup done properly so maybe I'll check with a spa in downtown Dartmouth, the Interlude, which is very nice. I've been there before. My face really needs fixing as the acne comes and goes regularly these days. Thank you menopause. Of all the symptoms I could have, why did you kick my vanity in the guts? ;) I think i'll go see them over the winter to figure out what they can do for me on the day. Hair. Makeup. Maybe i'll get a facial the week before. I even thought about getting a blue streak put in my hair to match my dress. Or maybe, red, white and blue, just a small thin highlight sort of thing. I could probably just do that myself with a paint on concoction. I should have a look since there is a lot of that out right now for Halloween. Lots of time to decide.
