Decent storm, not the worst we've had by any means but we did get to go home early on Monday just before it started which was nice. All " non essential personel". I get stressed about whether they would let us go before the storm gets really bad and transporation is a problem. I think they've finally started to come around over the last year or two and are now being more flexible with the staff when it comes to storms. They've even given us some snow days or mornings which they never used to do back when I first started here. So, home early on Monday and by Monday night we were told there would be a delayed start on Tuesday until noon, further updates at 10:30 a.m. which put it back to 1 p.m. Having less traffic on the roads helps the snow crews, see. Practice what you preach. THey tell the public to stay off the roads if at all possible and then expect their own staff to show up? Now they're making more sensible decisions!

I got to work and fired up the laptop. There are emails there that told our team we could have stayed and worked from home! Aggh! Well, here's the thing. We're told to phone the staff update line. Which I did, and that's for general staff, not any particular department. So I did that and didn't check my email. Why bother? I knew i wouldn't have to go in until 1. Another option was using a few vacation hours which, though I hate wasting them like that, I still might have done if I had known.

It doesn't really matter since I couldn't work from home without my laptop and I don't take it home every night. I only wish we'd have known it might have been a possibility! I think from now on when it looks like there's going to be bad weather, I'll bring it with me just in case. If it's a full day off, there's nothing to worry about but if it's a half day and they then say we can finish it from home, i'll have my tools with me. It only happens a handful of days over the winter.

Lessons learned. First, always check the email anyway, even if the staff phone line gives the basic info. Second, bring the laptop home before bad weather, just in case.
