Grammy Awards
Feb. 9th, 2004 08:31 amI didn't watch the Grammy awards last night other than a 30 second channel-switch when someone mentioned there was an act singing a Beatles Tune (it was Sting)...I am just perusing the list published in the paper today and noticed some welcome surprises and some oddities.
Apparently though, Evanescence won an award for Best New Artist and they also won for "Hard Rock Performance" for Bring Me To Life. Rar! Metal performace was won by Metallica for "St. Anger". Canadian Comedian Eugene Levy won for a song he cowrote (with Christopher Guest and Michael McKeen of Spinal Tap fame) for the movie "Mighty Wind" which was a satire on folk singers. Go Eugene! And oh my God, the great Aretha is still winning awards and George Harrison won one for an instrumental performance!! Wonder how long ago that was written considering he died in Dec. 2001. Johnny Cash also won for "short form music video" for "Hurt". I know a few people who will be pleased. It must be the year for posthumous awards too because i see on the list that Warren Zevon won something too for contemporary folk album. Most of the names on this list are the usual suspects, most of whose work i really don't know and don't care to.
I don't bother with most award shows. I do sometimes watch the award shows to do with the soaps because i know more of the people involved and i have a look at the Oscars if i've seen some of the movies. The outfits are always make for a fashion do/don't bitching session as well. I used to think the Grammy awards were pretty respectable but it looks like it's turning into just as much of a popularity contest as the rest. I see the name Luther Vandross on the list a lot this year. The man is quite ill ... makes me think this is a sympathy vote. And for a lot of the pop categories it's just the names that make the gossip columns mostly. Nice to see Evanescence win and they beat out someone named 50 Cent who walked on stage thinking he had won. Idiot. What can you expect from someone that can't even spell his name properly ;) "50 CentS" please. Maybe it should be "Plugged Nickel" for all i figure he's worth. Apologies to all 5C's fans. But really. If you're going to coin yourself something silly, you have to expect ridicule.
