Feb. 14th, 2004 05:43 pmBloody Hell... i've only been out for three hours, but it feels like i've been out all frigging day! I think i've traveled miles and walked one or two as well. I dropped off a book at a library and picked up one by Michael Marshall Smith, a recommended author. Not the book i was looking for, this one is called "One of Us". I started it on the bus. Strange. Popped into Pennington's and was completely unimpressed by their stock today. Into Staples since i had time before the bus, i thought i'd price ink cartridges for my printer. Got talking to a Canon rep who was demostrating a lovely printer that can print directly from a digital camera if it has the right technology. Told him about my printer not working properly and he suggested soaking the cartridge with the print heads in alcohol to clear it out. (Seems to be out of ink even after i put a new tank in).
So.... caught the bus to WalMart to see what they had for art supplies. Picked up some rubbing alcohol for the printer, and a colour wheel but they couldn't get the price to scan so i left it. They only had one easel but there was no hardware with it. I ran into some friends, he use to teach painting and i was chatting to him about it. He suggested Fisher's Stationary downtown Dartmouth. I wasn't going to go there, was going to head to Kent by the mall but the bus worked out so that i ended up at Fisher's anyway. Found a large easel. No price. Bugger. Nice man helped out and it was 36$. a bit pricey. But he showed me another one that was 24 and that suited me better. Looks like the same one WalMart had with the bonus of the screws to put it together *and* the guy put it together for me right there! I walked a few blocks to get the bus, waiting at probably the windiest spot in Dartmouth down by the water. Brrrr... i hadn't worn my winter coat because it was 2 or 3 degrees (had on my fleece jacket that they gave us from work) Finally got home on the 5 o'clock bus, just three hours after i left!
Yeesh.
So i have a hot cup of Horlick's (not bad at all, bet it would be brilliant with hot chocolate milk!). Can't say i'm chilling out cause i already was chilly. Warming up and relaxing now.
This new painting hobby is costing me! I suppose most hobbies do to start up. Guess i'll have to keep it up for a little while to make it worth while!
I was thinking while i was trudging around downtown that there are still a small number of businesses left that have been there since when i was a kid, or longer. Fisher's is one of them. Neiforth Furniture is another and there's a store that sells fur coats that's been there a long time. Most of the other shops have changed considerably over the years. There are tattoo parlors, some restaurants and cafes, there are a few very rough bars. The banks and other businesses come and go. I'm surprised Fishers was still there, what with competition being so stiff from places like Staples but they apparently carry supplies for Paintball (guns, paint etc) which probably keeps them going. Neiforth's has lovely furniture but it's very expensive. And furs are so out of fashion these days what with animal rights and all, that i'm surprised they're still going as well. I suppose they must make a bomb on fur storage.
Painting tomorrow. Going to Mom's after to give her her birthday pressie (birthday being Tuesday). I think my cousin Debbe is going to be there. Haven't seen her in years!
