Culture shock: Joan Jett was playing in the deli. Something that sounded African was on the speakers in the coffee shop.
In the news:
War veterans in Nova Scotia who have provincially issued license plates that have a veterans' logo on them are not going to be charged for parking at meter. Very nice gesture :) Ah but only until the end of the fiscal year in March. 2005 is the Year of the Veteran, y'see.
Health Canada is going to sell medically certified marijuana in selected drug stores next year for authorized patients. There currently is a company in Manitoba that grows it under a government contract and couriers it to the patients, about 250 of them across the country but another 600 or so are authorized to grow it themselves, including cancer, aids, MS patients for example.
Municipal governments run on property tax monies. Currently the City of New Orleans is so broke they can't make their payroll and are trying to secure lines of credit. I can only imagine. The cities hardest hit from Katrina are going to be in for years of financial trouble. They've lost a lot of property, buildings, businesses that provide commercial assessments that bolster up the bank account. All those casinos that were destroyed probably contributed millions in tax money to the coffers of the cities. Assessments for all those residential properties now lost or damaged are plummeting. Speaking as someone that works for a municipal government, i can really relate to it.
