Snow

Seems London got snow overnight and has a lot of people excited about it, in spite of transportation delays, especially those who come from tropical climes like Down Undah and have never seen it before. Ok i'll give you that one. We don't get heaps of it here in Halifax, or only one winter in 6 or 7 do we get pounded with it. We get some, and often it rains away in a few days. snow does look very pretty on the ground and on the trees until the cars and the pollution make it gray and dirty. Snow is heavy and hard to shovel and the plow inevitably dumps more on your driveway after you've cleared it. What's worse here, by the ocean, is the cold damp wind that often comes along with snow, rain, freezing rain or alone just to piss everyone off and chill you to the bone.

A couple of winters ago, Toronto got so much that the mayor called in the Canadian Army to help clear the streets and suffered the slings and arrows of the ridicule of the rest of the country for being city wimps LOL! I don't mind it too much becuase i live in an apartment and don't have to shovel it and I don't have a car to scrape the ice off in the morning and heat up. IT's a pain getting to or from work when we're in the grips of a storm but if the storm is forecast ahead of time I can arrange to work from home.

Canadians that winter in the southern climes of the U.S. are called Snowbirds.

Enjoy the snow. Make snow angels. You did know that every flake is different, right? :)))

Hm. Very interesting. Was it London Ontario that got the snow? *I* haven't seen or heard of any here since the icing sugar on Saturday, but perhaps a small amount, enough to impress Australians, fell on the other side of the metropolis.;-)

Shall have to start weather-watching soon with two of my nearest and dearest off to NA in Feb, it seems.
[livejournal.com profile] interlock really does not possess enough warm clothes for the mid-west in February.
Now I understand how my mother-in-law felt about vests!

According the the LJ'rs, it's your London not mine that got a few inches of it. Delayed a couple of trains and busses. Problem with not getting much snow, is that nobody knows how to function with it. Drivers can't drive and do not have tires equipped to handle the slippery roads, and traffic is insane as a result. Nobody has snow boots for walking and as you pointed out sometimes clothes aren't warm enough and yes, she will need her woolies to rug up under in the midwest in Feb. Brrrrrrrrrrr. You don't realize how cold it can get over here, you really don't!

O yes I do! [it is pantomime season;-)]- this time three years ago I was in Princeton NJ, visited Philly etc.
And I know Toronto and South Bend are likely to be colder still- tho it is warmer in Chicago than here today, as it happens.
It is indeed cold here at present by our GulfStream standards*, but its been dry, and as far as I knew the ice and thick snow and transport delays had all been in the North and Scotland.

* I've been wearing my Princeton coat again! Haven't needed my snow boots yet [but I do possess them ;-)]

Ah well then. And Chicago is usually sub arctic! we only get a handful of really cold days here on the coast, that would be -15 to -20 with windchills at least 10 more colder. Out west on the Canadian Prairies (and of course farther north) it's unbearable!

OO tells me the London snow was on the local news- of course I was on LJ and missed it! Cue further spousal mockery of CJ- that's me {cyberjunkie}
Of course I actually got the news quicker through LJ. if I hadn't been so sceptical- smacks own hand ;-)

LOL well if you want to read (if you haven't already) one person's LJ who was totally thrilled, an Aussie who's never seen it before and all the comments, his enthusiasm is almost catching! [livejournal.com profile] reddragdiva
