My favourite Movie
Mar. 16th, 2003 02:35 pmI'm watching Shirley Valentine. Again. Have lost count how many times i've seen it but i usually do watch it before i go on a vacation. My friend Jo always says oh no, you won't come back (a la Shirley)! The two best lines are these:
Costas and Shirley making out on the boat, he's talking complete bollocks about her stretch marks... she looks at the camera and says "Aren't men full of shit?" Indeed ;)
Daughter is disgusted by the thought of her mother and a friend going to Greece for two weeks on their own. Obscene, she calls it. Shirley leans out window shouting at retreating back, That's right, Milandra, i'm going to Greece for the sex. Sex for breakfast, sex for dinner, sex for tea and sex for supper!" Delivery man says "Sounds like a wonderful diet, luv". "It is... have you never heard of it, she calls out sardonically, it's called the F-Plan!" :))
Shirley started out life as a one woman play. I've seen it twice here in Halifax, once with a local actress who did a cracking job and once with the AMerican actress Loretta Swit (aka Hotlips Houlihan). She's supposed to have been performing this for years. She may have but her accent still stinks and i don't care for the way she portrayed Shirley, more tentative and nervous. Shirley doesn't have a lot of confidence in herself but finds it and herself as the plot progresses. But she has spunk just the same. Loretta's Shirley doesn't have that underlying spunk that Shirley had as a girl and is rediscovering. Pauline Collins does the movie and it's perfect.
