I've been keeping an eye on my photo stats on Flickr and over the last two days there's been a real spike over one photo, of the visitor center at the Lilliput Lane factory in the Lake District. That's odd, thinks I. over 30 views in 2 days? Flickr also has the referral urls and specific ones if you dig far enough and lo, and behold, apparently my photo was linked from an Italian forum, apparently to do with either Lilliput Lane cottages or similar. The mystery is solved! Actually i had a better photo than the one they had linked, it shows the visitor centre cottage without the sign in front but perhaps that's what they wanted to establish where it was. Anyway. Cool. :)

It's interesting to see what people are looking at too. You wonder what they were searching for when a photo gets a hit. You can drill down even though to the search engine criteria that was used as well. I'll often put a photo in one or more Flickr group which always ensures a few hits but long after the photo is near the front of the pool, it still can get hits from there or other searches. You also find it linked from various boards and forums too. One of my photos was added to schmap.com with permission, a photo of a mews in Paddingon, London so it sometimes gets hits from that.

Then i look at photos that other people have taken and i'm just blow away by how good some of them are. I'm talking about travel type photos by amateurs, not the pros and i compare them to mine... I know my photos can be pretty good, don't get me wrong, but then i see what other people do and i think mine are rubbish. One thing i really do have to get is a tripod, one of those bendy ones called a Gorillapod. They're portable enough to carry around and it will make low light and long zoom photos better. I'd want to get one that will hold a decent sized camera because eventually i will get a digital SLR so i won't get the smallest size available.

Hmm... Santa list?

The sheer volume of talent in the photography world is mind blowing. Like you, I see the work of others and feel mine pales in comparison. It is handy to know which photos get the most views which has been very helpful to me in selecting those to keep in rotation for my online portfolio for the business.

I'm an expert at out of focus photography, even with the camera set to auto-focus. ;)

Another thing that's a little easier to tote around than a tripod is a ( monopod ). Tim and I each have one, as well as our tripods. Tim also has a gorillapod. He uses the monopod more though.

i don't think i would hold the monopod any steadier though.

It does steady the camera a lot, and is adjustable to quite a height. All gorilla pods I've seen are very small and would probably have to be used on a table or something with a surface. So I find the monopod is a lot more adaptable. Personal preferences, I suppose. :)
