Raining all weekend. Didn't go out yesterday, stayed home and did laundry and watched Dexter. I see more Dexter in my immediate future as well as catching up with Downton Abbey. Was going to go out with Mom today but she doesn't really feel like it. It could also be a nice dreary day for a nap!
63 The Snapper - Roddy Doyle
I saw an Irish movie they made of this some years ago and it was quite funny. The book is all just lines of dialogue, no descriptions or not much at least. It's about a young Irish woman who gets pregnant. She won't tell her family who the father is though as the book unfolds we find out it's a married neighbour that took advantage of her one night finding her drunk outside a pub. If this was a darker book, you could probably make a case for rape though it wasn't a violent act. Anyway it's not that kind of book. It is quite funny, all the family and her father trying to deal with it all.
64. Witches on Parole - Unlocked - Debora Geary
Another of her books about the fictional witching community, this one about an organization called Witchlight which helps witches serve the community. It's about two witches, a young punk/goth type who is always in trouble and this is her community service type of sentence. It's either this or jail. The other witch is a psychologist and is very conservative, rigid and repressed. She's joined as a volunteer to help the community. Both women must share an apartment and it's not going well as they try to get on with the assignments the mentor gives them, hoping to give them insight into themselves and gain more confidence. It's funny and fun and i love all her characters.
65. Then Came You - Jennifer Weiner
This one is about fertility. One woman has remade herself and her life and wants to give her new rich husband a baby but can't. Another woman and her husband are struggling for money and she decides to be a surrogate. A third woman is a university student and is approached by someone from a fertility clinic and she ends up donating her eggs for a price, hoping to help her father battle his addictions in rehab with the money. The fourth woman is the step daughter of the first and isn't happy about her father's remarraige. Most of the book tells each of their stories in turn, and together when they start to cross paths. Each of them faces challenges and new beginnings in their lives. I liked this book. I've read others by this author and also enjoyed them so i knew this would be good as well.
66. The Botticelli Secret - Marina Fiorato
We start off with a young prostitude in Renaissance Florence who is asked to pose for a new painting by the master Botticelli. It's his famous Primavera painting. She steals the "cartoon" (i.e. draft) of the painting and immediately, her life is in danger. Her roomate, one of her clients and a monk are all three killed. She seeks sanctuary at a church where there are Franciscan monks and one of them ends up helping her. They realize there's a secret surrounding the painting, it is full of messages and they must decipher the secret. The book spans a number of cities and we encounter some historical characters like Lorenzo di Medici, Botticelli, and a man who wants to sail the world! It's good adventure as they discover each bit of the painting holds meaning and they have to have their wits about them as any misstep will find them dead.
