Actually, there's a reasonable track record on making a success of this, at least in sitcoms - Three's Company from Man About the House, All In The Family from Till Death Do Us Part, Sandford and Son from Steptoe and Son. Most recently, of course, there's The Office. I don't know of it working in drama, though.
