Wow, I really enjoyed Doctor Who last night! I've been looking for all the recaps and documentaries and related stuff. There's something called the Culture Show that did a special called "You and Me and Doctor Who" which was way better for a behind the scenes look back over the years than the glitzy docs that have been on with the clips and the potted histories. This delved into the writers, the special effects sound people, even a bit of gossip about various actors and production staff.
This article gives a pretty good summary of the storyline.
I was a bit surprised to see the War Doctor regenerate when he hadn't actually "died" but apparently there is precedent with one earlier Doctor forced to regenerate by the Time Lords when banished to Earth and others have said he can regenerate if he wanted to. I suppose this Doctor's work was done and once back in the TARDIS, he forgot he'd saved Gallifrey and probably felt pretty crap about what he thought he'd just done. Time for a new start.
I thought the use of the weapon's "conscience" in the form of Bad Wolf Rose Tyler was a good idea.
Things got a little "timey wimey" because Doctor 11 was thinking back to Elizabeth I when he was there, then the Zygons were there. If they'd been there when he was the first time, he'd already have sorted it. Did the Fez show up the first time around? "This is where I come in" says 11 and there he is, back in the original timeline. Apparently the Bad Wolf Rose created the time tunnels but 11 seemed to recognize them and moaned about not having the time. I don't think about that too much. There's a lot of paradox things that do my head in on this show. And how did Elizabeth think a Gallifreyan "painting" proved that her letter was authentic? I'll have to watch it a third time, I don't recall seeing it in the Tower in Elizabeth's time for the Zygons to get into but it must have been there. Oh my head.
Never mind. As I said, I don't delve into that too much unless it's really confusing. Did you think that Tennant's Doctor was a tiny bit stiff? Not quite as relaxed and into the role as he used to be when he was doing it every week. Just a tiny bit. He was still really good but it sometimes felt a little more like a performance than coming naturally. I suppose that's to be expected after a few years away from it. I didn't notice it so much but Graham did a bit.
LOVED the view of the next Doctor's eyes as he zoomed in with the others to save Gallifrey.
LOVED Tom Baker as the Curator. Now I wonder if he really was supposed to be The Doctor but how could he be? I suppose he could regenerate back into a familiar face but imagine how old he must be if that's the same one and if it is, he's probably not buried at Trensilore after all. Looks like the Christmas episode is going to deal with that then, it seems, the next season will be him trying to find Gallifrey.
Someone wondered if Gallifrey was frozen somewhere in time, how could the Master have brought back the Time Lords leading to 10's regeneration to 11? I thought that they could have been brought back fro wherever the Doctors sent the planet, we never did find out exactly where the Master was able to extract them from so it could be the same place and time.
Ah well, I was thoroughly satisfied with the anniversary episode and all it's little nods to history and to the future. John Hurt nailed it like I knew he would. Looks like he enjoyed it, too. I'm sure he just thinks of it as another job but i did see him in an interview saying he'd never done anything like it before.
I'm looking forward to the next Doctor. I enjoyed Matt Smith but I still like the idea of an older man in the part after two younger ones. It will be interesting to see what the personality is like. I hope he will still have an undercurrent of humour but he'll probably be a bit sterner and will not be as clown like as 11 or manic as 10 and 11. Maybe he'll be a little closer in temprement to 9 though less dark as he will know he didn't disintegrate his home planet.

Date: 2013-11-26 02:00 pm (UTC)Yes, I agree with Graham: Tennant was a bit stiff. Seemed ill-at-ease with both Smith and the incredible John Hurt (though what actor wouldn't be?). As for Hurt's comment, his entire career has been made up of "things he's never done anything like before". The man's a legend, and deservedly so. I thought he played a blinder.
It's no secret that I have never liked Matt Smith as the Doctor. So much so that I gave up watching entirely at the end of the series before last. The combination of him, and some absolutely appalling writing did it for me, and it was with great sadness that I had to admit not only was I no longer enjoying it, I was actively hating it so much I had to stop watching. Sooooo I have *great* hopes for Capaldi's Doctor to come. If the writing approaches the calibre of the Day of the Doctor (which for all its faults was still five orders of magnitude more watchable than anything Smith has done as the Doctor before it) then I can breathe a sigh of relief and return once more to the Fold Of Who :o)

Date: 2013-11-26 03:58 pm (UTC)One of my coworkers mused that it would have been great to have a whole season of the Time War Hurt Doctor! I am really looking forward to Capaldi too. I didn't mind Matt Smith, preferred Ecclestone of all of the new guys, liked Tennant but will be glad of one that looks (and probably acts) more middle aged and grown up.
