Movie Madness
Jul. 3rd, 2003 08:01 amI like to go to movies, at least once a month and there hasn't been anything that has really appealed to me for months! I think the last one i saw was the Life of David Gale. no i did see one in Glasgow but it wasn't my choice, it was the new Vin Diesel movie which wasn't that good though i honestly did go in to see it with an open mind lol I scan the paper every Thursday to see what is opening and am usually disappointed. I'm not into action movies like Matrix, try studiously to avoid cgi filled ones like Hulk (ok, i did like both Lord of the Rings though the cgi in the first one bugged me), horror movies only if it's really well done and not a slasher kind of movie (Saw the Ring on dvd and it was pretty good!). There's a gooey romantic comedy on now and though i like Kate Hudson, i don't like Luke Wilson and i'm just not in the mood for it. Dumb and Dumberer? Well, it's appropriately named at least ;) Don't like Jim Carrey's humour though have thought he was good in serious roles esp. the Andy Kaufman flick.
Anyway there is a NZ flick on, Whale Rider, that i thought might be good and lo and behold there is a very good review in today's Daily News by the local movie chick so i think i may go see that instead. Can't point you to that review as i see though the Daily News has a new website, it's still got yesterday's headlines on it and doesn't look like it's going to have the review anyway. They don't put as much of the paper online as they used to.
Anyway it's a quiet little sleeper about a young girl who is born into a very long and prestigious Maori family. She is by the legends, probably the one to be the successor to the tribal leadership because her twin brother died at birth but her grandfather dismisses her as the cause of recent tribal bad luck. So it's a coming of age story but apparently done very very well, not schmaltzy and overly sentimental like some. I think i'll go see it this weekend because it's been here a week already and if it's still on tomorrow i figure it will be the last week it's playing here.
And The Hours is out on dvd. I missed seeing it in the theatre and i've heard good things about it. Anyone see it?
