tvordljDecided quite suddenly to book tickets to see Matt Minglewood at the Casino in February. Matt's been around the scene in clubs for donkeys' years going back to the mid to late 70s. While I wasn't a regular clubber back in the day, when I did go, It was to see Matt's band at the old club Misty Moon. His music was initially very bluesy rock and it took on a bit of a country edge over the years but still kind of rock-y as well. Naturally, I prefer the older tunes!
I can still remember a crowded bar, with the band playing East Coast Blues. Matt was wearing red satin shorts, a hockey jersey and his trademark stetson. During the solo, he hopped off the stage, played his way over to the bar then got up on the bar to play, making his way back when the solo was done. Good times.
This gig is to launch a new cd and to celebrate his birthday. His 70th. Christ. I thought I was reliving my youth but when I think he's turning 70, then I must be...... oh heck. (yes, I *am* younger than he is!) I used to work with someone that knew him personally and was far more of a groupie than I ever was. I only got to see them a handful of times but she went to their gigs all the time. She was from cape Breton where he's from and I think I remember her saying she went out with the drummer for awhile. One of the band members anyway, but not Matt. She was definitely a party girl but his song Whiz Kids was *not* about her and her friends, apparently, it was about two other women that were groupies.
G. said he'd go with me. I know it's not really his kind of music but he's willing. He went to a concert with his nephew earlier in the year, Black Crows I think, he said they were dreadful but even his nephew was disappointed. He liked one of their songs so assumed he'd like them all. Wrong. Here's hoping he won't hate this one too much! My cousin and his wife are going as well and may be my other friend. S. I must call her. I didn't call her when we decided to go because it was very spur of the moment. If she decides to go, i can tell her where we're sitting. She might have good luck booking a single seat to get it near us.
