In the news today
Aug. 28th, 2003 11:20 amI've not done a newspaper sweep in awhile have i?
VLT's are Video Lottery Terminals, i.e. gambling machines. Not the kind in the casino, they're the kinds in the bars. Last year they brought out a new kind that were "less addictive"... they have clocks on them so you know how long you've been there, they force a cash out after a certain period of time ( i think)and they show the dollars you've spent/won instead of credits. Now the provincial government wants an inquiry as to why more money is being spent on these "less addictive" gambling machines LOL!
From the federal government today, new regulations on passport photos. You won't be allowed to smile anymore. Nor will you be allowed to frown or grimace. Just a neutral espression. As if passport photos weren't grim enough! It's supposedly going to make it easier for a security check to recognize you. So when you go through security, don't smile, don't frown, don't cry cause you're leaving your loved one behind, don't laugh, don't talk to your traveling compantion. stop a minute, freeze expression. Cripes.
Brown University has a curriculum for a new course on 21st century education. The course prospectus reads "What is a terrorist? How does a terrorist differ from a Freedom Fighter? (indeed!) Who gets to decide?" There isn't much more i can add to that little piece of wisdom except a bit of further explanation. Apparently the students do role playing and argue for and against groups like the IRA and the Chechen Rebels.
Appalling legal decision of the week: A Nigerian Islamic woman has been sentenced to death because she had sex outside of marriage. She divorced over 2 years ago and had a baby more than a year after that. The alledged father of the child has denied responsibility *and acquitted*. Wonder what happens to the father if he had been convicted? It doesn't say in the article but so many of these types of countries, the men get off lightly anyway. I suppose if he was sentenced to a similar death, and they weren't doing any blood tests to prove it, he could lie and keep his life. She can't as she had the baby. No way to deny that. Sentencing will be held off until the child is weaned. The child is nearly 2. I'd be nursing that baby until she had dentures of her own if that was the case. I hate that i live in a world where things like this still happen.
