I had a nice long natter with my sweetie this morning then a quick chat with Tracey and headed over to Halifax again. The weather picked up a bit, some blue sky and a lot of humidity! :( I had on a cool tank top and proper shoes this time though and i took stops for a fruit smoothie, for water and for a barbequed sausage at the Acadian tent to listen to some hot Cajun music. I took a few seconds movie of it with my camera too but i don't really have a spot to upload it so it's going to be just for me i guess lol
Lots and lots of crowds, more or less moving steadily if slowly along the waterfront. I managed to go on board 4 ships including the big Mexican one but the other ones i really wanted to go on had lineups longer than the ship itself and it was just too hot to wait. There really isn't a whole lot to look at though one ship i was on, the Gazela was built in 1883 and was a fishing boat up until 1969. There were some photos on board in a dorey from her last fishing trip. She's restored of course. You can't be over 100 years old and still seaworthy with all your original wood intact but it has been restored very well and still has that antique feel to it. Had a brief chat to one of the older crew members about it. Lovely old ship. A lot of the tall ships are actually freighters converted to mast ships, not authentic wooden boats. This one definitely isn't and she's got the personality and grace to prove it. I can't wait to see her in sail on Monday.
The Mexican ship had a photographic exhibition on deck which was nice. I really enjoyed the Cajun music. A trio playing various string instruments were there when i was, mandolin, bass fiddle (or cello i'm not sure which), guitars, fiddle. Cracking trio they were. I reckon the ships down the south end of the waterfront where the Grou Tyme festivities had the best deal of it, that music couldn't help but move your feet!
On the way back i didn't brave the throngs again, i walked back to water street and started back that way and noticed a Chinese tea room across the street from the Bishop's Landing development called Mulan Tea Room and it had Chinese crafts as well. I went in, sat down at the bamboo and glass topped tables and chairs and had a glass of Chinese red iced tea. Just hit the spot, that! I came home and had another shower to wash off the stickiness and am now chilling out with a diet coke. Must upload the rest of the photos i took today.
Sis, i am not sure if Alderney gate is going to be a good spot. Last time, the ships started turning around before they got that far so unless you have binoculars, it might not be the best venue. Call me later.
