Historic Halifax
Jul. 20th, 2006 09:11 amSomething a little different...There's a new virtual exhibition of photos of Halifax between the years 1870 and 1885 or thereabouts. These were taken by the Royal Engineers and are primarily military buildings, barracks, but there are also other interesting photos as well. A few of the ones from the Citadel show the view over parts of the city, there are a number of residences and barracks, also one of an interior parlour and one of the building that is now the Henry House restaurant on Barrington Street. Also very neat is a series of photos taken during the demolition of the "Poor Asylum" after it was gutted in a fire. Fascinating. They were all taken with the glass plate type "negative" in the relatively early days of photography. Website here, click on Virtual Exhibit. You *may* need to install a viewer called Viewpoint though maybe not for the photos. I did to be able to view a line drawing map of the location of various forts and bases. Also on that page, there's a link to the Public Archives' "Halifax and it's People" with more old photos and paintings. Excellent for local history buffs.
ETA I just realized i passed by work anniversary the other day. 18 years working for the City of Halifax and HRM. Still at the bottom of the totem pole but you know what? Some of us are just meant to be worker bees. I'm quite happy doing what i'm doing and i have no desire to move up to anything supervisory other than things like programming lead or something if that comes up on occasion.
