Lost in Austen
Sep. 2nd, 2008 08:50 amThere's a new four part series starting this week on ITV in the UK called Lost in Austen and it's about a modern day woman that finds a portal in her bathroom that takes her into the realm of Pride and Prejudice, the classic Jane Austen novel. The character of Elizabeth Bennett comes to 2008 and she goes back in time. We don't really see what happens to Elizabeth until the fourth part, we're following Amanda's adventures trying to keep the original storyline going right but of course it goes completely wrong. The ITV information for it is ( behind the cut )
It starts Wednesday night and I shall be downloading it for sure. I think it looks really fun. The costumes and location shots are lush and gorgous as well and the casting looks pretty good even if i don't really know who most of them are, though some do look familiar to me. (Hugh Bonneville plays Mr. Bennet, i know him and Alex Kingston plays Mrs. Bennet, i know here too from Doctor Who) If anyone is interested, there's a downloadable press pack here. Yes, the premise has been done many times in many ways but combining it with the well known novel is a neat twist. I don't know if it will be on Canadian tv but i think it would be perfect for PBS's Masterpiece or something on CBC so you never know, it might appear here. I expect it will be on dvd in the UK too.
Pride and Prejudice isn't my favourite Austen book of the ones i've read but it is quite good. I've seen film versions of most of them except maybe Northanger Abbey which i must rectify. I love Persuasion, the version with Ciaran Hinds in, and i love love Sense and Sensibility with Alan Rickman. I liked Gwynneth Paltrow's Emma and of course Colin Firth's P&P is excellent too. I liked Mansfield Park as well. There was a movie version with, Jonny Lee Miller that i liked and i've seen the Billie Piper version which was ok but not quite as good. I should revisit the books too as it's been years since i've read any of them. There's a movie out now, on dvd, about a Jane Austen Book Club where 5 women and a man each have a book to discuss and the movie also goes into each of their private lives. I saw pieces of it but not the whole thing. Must rectify that too.
