Feb. 28th, 2015 10:32 amOpportunity knocked yesterday, or, rather, it texted. My cousin's girlfriend wasn't feeling well and he had a spare ticket going to see Colin James at the Casino last night. Colin James is a Canadian rocker with a blues edge as well. Very talented. However, I don't really know a lot of his music aside from a couple of hits he's had, "Just Stopped In to Say Goodbye" and "Voodoo Thing" mainly. Still, never mind. I knew it would be a good show and it makes up for missing Bryan Adams the other week so I went. His girlfriend's sister and her husband went as well. We stopped for a burger and parked up about an hour before the show. If we hadn't gone when we did, the parking garage at the Casino would have been full though there are other places nearby. The parking garage at the Casino ends up being free if you present the tickets to Visitor Services, so that's a bonus not to be missed if you can help it.
So yes. Colin James. He's been here a number of times but I haven't been. I was quite surprised to see how small he is! I always have in my mind that people will probably be an average size and am always surprised when they're much larger or smaller than I expect.
I remember catching a glimpse of a well known Canadian skater, Elvis Stojko, some years back and saw that he's quite short though very muscular as you would be as an athlete. On tv when you see the mens' skating competitions, they are all more or less the same size with the women smaller. You don't really think that they'd all be little but they seem to be. The really tall ones stand out and I bet they're really only average height! It's all perceptions. In the old days when I spent a lot of time on IRC chat rooms, in my mind the chatters were always around my own age (late 30s to early 40s at the time). When you then saw a photo of someone you'd been chatting to for awhile and they hadn't specified their age, it was usually another surprise and they were 20 to 40 years older than me and they always looked different than you pictured! The younger ones usually always mentioned their age or activities so you could pretty much tell. Of course there were lots my age as well.
Anyway, Colin James. Good gig, only played one of the two songs I was familiar with (not Voodoo Thing which is a fast hard rocking tune (Live version here). Just Came Back is good, too, more catchy, Live version here, with a bluesy slower intro). I like the Casino, you get proper chairs, not cramped in like at the big stadium venue (unless you're on the floor), or it's just standing room only and it's a large room so it feels "closer".
