Two Feet and a Heartbeat
Feb. 21st, 2004 02:50 pmI wanted to go down to the gym today, i was all dressed and packed and ready. And couldn't get a cab. (No busses until Monday!!!!!!!!!!!!) Either got a busy signal or they weren't answering. I guess they're run off their feet likely and probably a few cabs not able to even get on the road. So i walked. Not to the gym, that's too far though there were a couple of people i saw coming back from that end of town on foot, with flats of beer over their shoulder! Can't do without the necessities can you! (It's ok, i have Bailey's, Vodka and a bottle of wine for emergencies) But there's a grocery store not very far away from me that's normally an 8-10 minute walk over the hill. I walked down there on a side road that was in ok shape and not as steep as the more direct route.
The grocery store was insane. No carts left so i only got what i could carry. They were really low on milk but there was some so i got 2L. People were lining up by the bakery to get bread. But there were a few loaves of multigrain on the shelf so i had one of those and a bag of bagels. Got some popcorn, paper towels and oven cleaner in case i really got bored hahahaha. Walked back the shorter way though it's a steep hill. The road was cleaner though no wider than one lane. The hill wasn't a problem as you could only go from driveway to driveway before more cars would come by. I came down the other side, a much more gradual incline. Just across the road from the back parking lot to my building, i slid down and landed squarely on my dignity! Damn! I was almost home too! I got back up and crossed the street. There were two guys working on clearning the parking lot and they asked if i was ok. They saw me coming and then i just disappeared behind a snowbank from their point of view LOL! Oh well, i've had my exercise for the day anyway. And again, it wasn't that cold out at all.

sammantha's journal that our grandad died. He wasn't blood related but since he married Nan before i was born, he's the only one i know from that side of the family. Leo was a quiet man, he wasn't openly affectionate and he tended to sarcasm and teasing but i think that's the only way he knew to relate to kids at least, never having had his own. He was good to my Nan and to my Mom and her younger sister and brother and was a kind of father figure to the younger two though Mom was a bit older.
He liked to build things. He renovated the inside of their house a couple of times, ripping down walls and putting up other ones. He was handy with a motor, especially on the back of a fishing boat. He loved his dogs. He had a beagle, black with a reddish tan head, called Snapper. When that one died, he got another one and named it Snapper Too. Nan used to give us Christmas presents, usually something little like underwear and tag it "From Snapper". He and Nan had a trailer in Canso where he grew up and spent a lot of time there. A few years after Nan died, he found someone to share his life with, Mary. Mary was Nan's good friend from years ago so it was kind of nice that it was someone she would have approved of. Mary died a couple of years ago though. He's had Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home for the last couple of years but has been able to recognize some family members sometimes though at other times astonished to realize we kids have grown up. I wasn't particularly close to him because he wasn't always that easy to get to know but as i said, he was good to the people i love and he wasn't a bad man. He'll be with Nan and Mary both now.
