Madam Tussauds has created a celebrity Nativity. There's a picture of it in the paper today. Shepherds: Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant and Graham Norton, Joseph and Mary: Posh and Becks, the angel: Kylie Minogue and the wise men: Tony Blair, Prince Philip and George Bush. Apparently Christian church leaders are all in a tizzy over having Posh and Becks as Jesus' parents. It's weird too, Posh is half hidden under a veil and long dress and looks like she's peeking out, frightened. Jackson looks threatening, Hugh looks jolly and Graham Norton looks a bit resigned. Blair looks like a deer caught in the headlights, Philip looks arrogant (no change there then) and George looks stunned (no change there either) and Kylie has her ass stuck up in the air. (i assume no change there either)

What flabbers my ghast is that nobody seems to be objecting to Blair/Phil/GW as "wise" men! that's far more appalling than having Posh and Becks as Joseph and Mary ;)))))

On another front, i won a long black skirt on ebay. I didn't expect it, thought i would be outbid so yay me! And since i had done some shopping for a friend and she paid me by paypal, i went for expedited shipping and her payment to me covered that plus a little bit besides. This time of year i figured it would be best to get the faster shipping route. I just hope it's blacker than it looks in the pictures cause i have a black top that i can wear with it and it's *black* not gray-black.

No, lots have people have pointed out that Bush as "Wise" takes the biscuit! But I think the popes objection was to using individuals for the principals, which he claimed was not usually done in art- whereas actually that is probably more like "not usually modelled on *famous recognisable* individuals.
It all depends how you look at it, (and it's arguable how the visitors in general will see it) - whether the co-option of the nativity as just another bit of festive iconography you can play about with, and implying that Posh and Becks are semi-sacred figures, or a reminder that the story is about the identification of the divine with humankind, and about admiration and worship such as are given to celebrities nowadays.
It should be a really good example of the latter- and can certainly be used as such, but I think it was probably meant as a bit of a send-up, all the better because it could be defended/got away with
on the second grounds, while actually attracting visitors for celebrity-admiring or ribald reasons.

As a send up, i think it works very well. the focus of the write up in our paper was the outrage of the church about using celebrities. But then they often don't have much of a sense of the sublime irony do they lol Most of the "models" are the usual tabloid fodder pushed on the public, elevated to celebrity status in lieu of talent, flavour of the month, or being the butt of political scorn. I do have a feeling though, that Samuel Jackson might be horrified, as the general "voice of reason" amidst the temple of fools. Graham Norton would, in my view, be the Greek chorus lol

Okay Di, you're gonna have to tell me how that ebay thing works. I've never been there, or even have a clue how the bidding works. Can you inform the rest of us ebay newbies???

Congrats on the skirt by the way. It'll look wonderful on you!

you have to create an account there which costs nothing. Then you usually enter your maximum bid at the bottom of the page. Nobody knows what that is and the ebay software will first allot you the next increment over whatever the standing bid is. If other people also have higher maximum bids the price will jump up to whoever has the highest and let you know if it's you or you have been outbid. You can then up your bid if you want. Always check to see how you will have to pay. When i first joined i always paid by money order which is a bit of a pain in the ass. Not all bidders will accept money orders though. Increasingly it seems to be by a company called paypal which is very good and very safe. You sign up to paypal and hook it into your bank account or your credit card and it creates a debit from which ever account you have it set to and electronically transfers the money to the seller's account. I mostly buy dvd's on it and defininitely always set my own maximum and rarely go above it. Mostly the bidding is always in US funds unless it's another country but it's never in Canadian funds though if you use ebay.ca it will show you the equivalent.
