An Air France jet has crashed on landing at Toronto's Pearson airport and is now burning. No cause known at the moment but lightening struck it, possibly after it hit the ground. The pilot managed to keep it upright and straight and guided it off the end of the runway (and away from the hugely busy 401 highway right next to it) and into a ravine. There are survivors as well, not known if all made it out but tenetative reports say all the passengers and crew made it out which, if true, is excellent news indeed, even though there will be injuries. Weather in Toronto is foul today, high wind, rain, electrical storms. One survivor was on the phone to the media and it sounded like the power went before the aircraft hit the ground. Anyway, the pictures on the tv show a huge plume of smoke drifting over the highway. Reports have the pilot injured and some survivors were seen up on the highway dazed, including the copilot who was taken to hospital by a motorist that stopped. Anyway now of course they're analyzing, speculating, they have weather experts in, and all sorts while waiting for any news or a press conference.

It is amazing that no one was seriously hurt! The crew was top notch and got the passengers off PRONTO. Creepy cause just a few weeks ago we were flying in from Charles de Gualle and landed in a big rain storm.

yes! i'll be interested to know what the cause was. My first thought was a lightening strike.

I saw this on the news, they said the plane was landing during a heavy thunder storm and swerved off the runway. All passengers were off the plane *before* it burst in to flames. Didn't mention being hit by lightning though they haven't done all the analyzing yet with the infamous black box.

They don't know yet if it was lightening but i think it's a good chance. They had everyone out in under 2 minutes and are saying most of the injuries that happened were from the evacuation not the crash.
