There's been an interesting murder case in western Canada recently. A 13 year old girl was just convicted of first degree murder for persuading her boyfriend to kill her parents and little brother last year when she was 12. She can only be sentenced to a maxiumum 10 years because she's under 14 and only 6 of them can be incarcerated. All agree that it was her *23 year old* boyfriend that did the actual stabbings and he's not even entered a plea yet. She persuaded him to kill them because they disapproved of her relationship with him. Duh. 12... 23... do the math. The parents should have had him arrested rather than strongly objecting. Anyway. The defence says that he did it on his own, under the influence of drugs. The prosecution maintained that it was at her urging, she helped him break in and left a window unlocked for him, also encouraged him while he was doing it. The jury believed the prosecution. I hope that child gets some major psychiatric help. And that boyfriend? needs to be in jail for the rest of his life.

A heritage building in Halifax is undergoing some renovations that will take a couple of years. The city surrounded it and has allowed the walls to be painted by local artists to brighten up the construction site and not have plain white walls that would only encourage graffiti anyway. I must have a look when i'm down in that area this weekend seeing the ships. It's a great idea.

Did anyone watch any of the Life Earth concert on the weekend? I saw a few bits and pieces. Mostly unimpressed but i did think Madonna did a stonking job. I missed most of the "name" acts but did catch hers. After the concert, apparently the floor of Wembley was covered in plastic cups. I hope they were recyclable! I'm of two minds about a concert like that. It seems an awfully huge waste of energy and resources even if they tried to make it "green". On the other hand, it does get the message out and might have a worthwhile fall-out effect if a few more people do their bit. I probably don't do as much as i could but i do recycle, compost, take the bus or a taxi rather than own a car (and would take the bus to work even if i did have a car), keep most of the lights out if i'm not using them. I should get those cfl light bulbs too. I have one and my desk lamp is that sort already. My kitchen light is fluorescent too. I try to give older clothes away or donate them and i take short showers and don't leave the water running when i brush my teeth. Every little bit helps.

One of the noticeable things about Leipzig is that you pay 2 euro as a deposit on a plastic cup - so nobody ever drops them or throws them away. Contrast to the end of the last punk festie I went to in Birmingham where the floor was ankle-deep in shattered skiffs because people just ditch them. I'd much rather pay and not risk getting cut on the dancefloor, never mind the huge amounts of waste.

I can't imagine them using glass at a festival like that. I agree, i don't mind paying for a reusable cup either.

what a strange sad story, if my kid was 12 and "dating" a 23 year old I'd be at the police straight away

I think it was a bit of a let down the Live Earth thing, bit like the concert for Diana

I didn't see any of the concert for Diana, forgot it was on. I remember the first Live Aid, saw a lot in the morning and more in the evening and it was fantastic.

By the age of 12 you are pretty much complete. People as grownups seem to forget that.
I doubt her parents had much power to stop her from seeing him despite their protestations.

Maybe so, but there are laws to protect children under 14 or 16, i forget which is the legal age of consent in Canada. 12 might be old enough to consent to sex, but what does a 12 year old *really* understand? They certainly aren't emotionally mature enough for it and it's uncomfortably close to being and issue of pedophelia with a 23 year old man and a 12 year old girl.

Indeed!
I don't know why a 23 year old fella would want to hang out with a kid other than for nefarious reasons...

the girl admitted to killing her little brother tho.
I feel the bf did the adult killings mainly cause of needing the strength I would think.
What song/s did Madonna sing at the concert?

I only recognized one of the three, a sort of Spanishy one. The first one was slower, she apparently wrote it for the concert and i forget what the other one was.
