Day 3 - My favourite television show

It will be no surprise to anyone that my favourite show is Coronation Street. I got hooked on it 20 years ago and never looked back. With the advent of the internet, my interest in it expanded and i met loads of like minded people all over the world through online forums and chat rooms. While the chat room has gone nearly completely quiet, i still keep in touch with those friends though it's through facebook more often now with many of them, Still, i've also made some really special friends too (you know who you are!). It's opened me to more travel opportunities with friends in many places. I've become involved in a local group that puts on get togethers for fans and an event show every year so i've got chances to meet actors from the show as well. I've visited the set twice. *That* was very cool!

And...best of all...i gained a lovely man and love of my life because he came into the Corrie chat room on the invite of someone that was a regular there!

I've been interviewed by the media on several occasions, i did some freelance (paid) blogging and now blog on a friend's site as well. I download the UK episodes but i still watch the Canadian ones (we're 10 months behind). I write an episode summary for one episode a week for a mailing list. I assist with one of the better known fan websites. Yep, i'm a pretty major fan but believe me, i *can* differentiate between fiction and reality! I own books, dvds and memorabilia but my house isn't a shrine.

Getting involved with the local group can be a lot of work but it's fun too. And i have strangers start talking to me in shops, on planes or at bus stops. They know me because of the events but i don't always recognize them. But when they start talking Corrie, i realize where they know me from.

Yeah :(((( Maggie Jones had been ill in hospital since Oct. Was getting better but took a turn for the worse.

I was sad to read about Maggie Jones. Zelda was very fond of her and quoted her often. ;-) I read she died after a long illness. Do you know what was the matter with her? She looked so frail and thin for ages, I thought.

No i don't think it was ever said. She has been off ill a few times over the past 10 years and had a fall in October i think but then had a major operation in October. I"m not sure if the fall was then or another time. Or if it was related to the op, i can't remember.

I have often wondered....why Corrie and not, say, Eastenders or Emmerdale?

Eastenders and Emmerdale were not shown in Canada for years and years but Corrie has been carried by CBC here since the late 60s. CBC carried Emmerdale for a few years a little while back and EE for a very short time about 20 years ago. One cable station carried Emmerdale for a few years and we get EE on BBC Canada now but it's not easily accessible. CBC is one of three or four tv stations that everyone in Canada gets even if you don't have cable tv. Emmerdale never grabbed me and i do watch EE though not much lately.

Corrie is hugely popular in Canada for those reasons but also because there's a lot of British ex-pats here too. Canada seems to have a strong connection to the "mother" land.
