Aug. 25th, 2011 10:53 amTelemarketing calls are annoying, right? Even more then they're pre-recorded. Mostly, due to call display, if it says Long Distance and it's a type of toll free number or a number i don't recognize, i cancel the call. These calls in the daytime never leave a message. Naturally. I reckon if it turned out to be a legitimate long distance call they would do and i would return the call. Once in awhile i do try to answer if i'm home in case i do get a live person and then i can tell them to take me off the list. The other thing i do take if i know what it is are the telephone surveys. I usually don't mind doing those. But you never know what is and isn't sometimes just by the number.
Anyway.
Mostly it's telemarketers and there have been several a day lately. Once in awhile i pick it up and wait long enough to hear if it's a pre recording or not. Last night i did and yet again, it was Money Mart. These have been coming in several times a week at least. Usually i hang up which i did this time but i decided to see if i could get hold of someone to get my name off their call list. I've already registered with a National Do Not Call list and made sure it's up to date but they don't cover non-Canadian sourced calls or charity calls or calls from these survey companies that i've accepted before. I'm guessing Money Mart automated calls are not any of these. So i'm on the Moneymart.ca and see a facility to talk to a live agent. Perfect. No waiting on hold. Don't know if that will help at all but i might get somewhere.
Click ... connect... Yep, got an id and an agent. Tell him what's going on and here's my phone number. He tells me that the calls are coming from "Recovery" aka Collections and there's two outstanding debts belonging to that phone number. WHAT THE FUCK? I've never used Money Mart in my life and there's no way i could have any debts through them. Odd that he would know which department they came from if i didn't give him the phone number that was on the call display, though. Bloody scam artists if you ask me, with sky high interest rates on top of it. He gives me a number to call to talk to a customer service person in person though why he couldn't do that the other person did, i don't know but i suppose each type of agent has their job.
Call the number, get through and ask. Buddy looks up the number himself, no debts, he says. I don't know what the other guy did, if it was a wrong number or if it was some sort of scam, but this fellow said he'd pass on my phone number to the supervisor who would arrange to take the number off the call list. We'll see what happens. I know they've got their job to do but it's a nasty job, telemarketing and they probably get a lot of abuse. If i get caught in a call, i'm firm but polite and if i have to hang up on them i do. Once in awhile they won't take no for an answer and the worst offender I've had to deal with was someone that wanted me to switch long distance companies. This was also before the Do Not Call register was in place and before i had call display.
Registering at the DNC thing seemed to be good thing for awhile but every now and then i get a rush of calls that i don't take. This seems to be part of a new lot. I'll be interested to see if they do remove my name and if so, how many of the usually daily "long distance" calls it gets rid of. Some of those calls show a phone number and some don't.
Anyway.

Date: 2011-08-25 05:33 pm (UTC)We have been hounded to death by calls from a company that shows up on the call display as a Public Interest Company. I always do a reverse look-up on the incoming phone number. On their website is a list of their clients and I see one or two we have donated to in the past. Asking to be taken off the list hasn't worked very well so I have blocked them from our phone number. It's such a nuisance.

Date: 2011-08-26 12:29 am (UTC)You also have to update your DNC registry every 2 years I believe. Adding yourself to this list isn't indefinite, which few people realize.
