Thin lizzy, more on the Toronto rock concert, and miscellaneious musical mutterings.

Rattler mentioned Thin LIzzy to me last night and i of course know the name of the band but couldn't place it with a hit. He was willing to stake his liver on me loving Live and Dangerous and not to fanny about downloading songs, just go and buy it. Well i did have a look on Kazaa and oh. my. god. The Boys Are Back In Town.. *that* Thin Lizzy! Ok, gotcha now LOL! And i always thought they were Canadian but are UK/Ireland. Seems to me then, that a Canadian band must have covered Boys are Back

Am watching the tape of the Toronto concert last night. Guess Who is on now. No, no, don't guess, i mean the band Guess Who is on stage. GW were a Canadian icon in the early and mid 70's. Now i loved them then. Still like their music cause it takes me back. Interesting story about how American Woman was written and apparently true too as i'm sure i've seen an interview with one of the band members at some point. Gig... break.. Burton off in a corner somewhere chatting up some chick. Band back on stage waiting for him. Waiting. One of the band members starts playing the now famous intro riff da da da da da da .. da da. dadadadada da-dum. You know the one. Burton comes back on stage and indicates to them to keep playing and basically made up the lyrics on the spot....

American Woman
Stay away from me
American woman
Mama let me be
Don't want you hanging around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
Now, Woman
Said get away-hay
American Woman
Listen what i say hey... etc...

So there's the Guess Who on stage, 35 years older. Burton sounds a little worse for wear. His voice is ok but it ain't what it used to be. Randy Bachman has lost 100 or more pounds and i think Burton and the Drummer found it. No matter. Randy Bachman can still play the geetar like nobody's business and it's the riff that takes me back again.

Rush is up next. You can't mistake Geddy Lee's voice. What a phenomenal band for a three piece group. For some obscure reason there are washing machines on stage behind them and i have no idea what's up with that. There also appears to be a garden gnome on one of them and he's got a little guitar in his hands. Geddy, Neil and Alex have weathered the years as we all have. Geddy's voice has not changed one iota. Progressive rock at it's best. 2112 one of my all time favourites.

Was talking about blues this afternoon in the office and we mentioned Dutch Mason, local blues God. The man's hands are twisted with arthritis these days but he can and does still sing though i think mainly his guitar playing days are just about over. Could NOT think of his title... Duke of Blues? nope... Earl... nope. Sharon even called a friend for her lifeline but no luck there. Sharon later walked past again and i again thought... hmm Governor.. oh close.. something political.. Premier? ..AHA the Prime Minister of Blues! *relief* This weekend is the Halifax city birthday celebrations, called Natal Day and Saturday afternoon there's a cheap outdoor concert with various local blues artists. Think i may go over for a listen and a beer or three.

AC/DC... buddy is still wearing the school uniform and has got to have the whitest legs on any Aussie i've ever seen LOL They still sound the same and they've still got a lot of enegy and stage presence.

And Finally...

There they are. Mick Jagger has turned 60. Most of the rest of them are that or more. Keith looks like the walking undead, pale, ratty looking gray hair and dark ringed eyes. Yeesh. Can you say zombie? Ron Wood with a ciggy hanging out of his face half the time (who lights them for him? it appeared after they started playing!) But ... Mick has more energy than any senior citizen i've seen, he's a live wire. The rest of them don't seem to have that much in comparison but they make it look so easy. Keith's riffs are so familiar. He might not be the greatest guitar player in the world but he really is one with his instrument and it shows. It seemed to pick up later but then how could they not be revved up by half a million people! There's still a special chemistry there. Man, i sang Hey Jude with 30,000 people and Paul McCartney. I will probably never get to sing Satisfaction with Mick and 450,000 or even 20,000. For those that got the chance, *That* must have been a mind blower and my friend Alan is going to see them in Manchester this fall! Dog! ;o)

People always say how the Beatles were the best band ever and they did, i agree, change the face of music radically. But where are they now? The Stones have been together, making records, touring, for over 40 years now and show no signs of stopping and are as popular as ever. Sadly CBC didn't just go to the Stones bit and let it play live as it unfolded. They replayed the opener then rejoined them later after an apparent costume change or strip lol from what it looked like.

Someone i was talking to online last night said the Stones were her generation. She's in her early 60's. Well you know what? They're my generation too! And they would be my kids' generation if i had kids. I grew up with the STones in the 70's as much as someone did in the 60's. The first Stones album i remember clearly and passionately was Goats Head Soup though i was fully aware of them for a few years before that. You just can't argue with the Rolling Stones.

:)) thanks

It wasn't really a concert review as such as they didn't really show the whole concert lol just annoyances and observations. I have a good friend who really has a great turn of phrase and i never compare myself well with his narratives. But it doesn't stop me from doing it, especially my travelogues :) Did you ever go back and see my concert review from the McCartney concert in Manchester? It was in April, posted after the 9th.
