There are birdies around but there ain't no green grass though there are a few hardy and optimistic crocuses reaching for the clear cloudless sky today in Halifax. I rang my friend Carole for a chat and mentioned i was going on an excursion to the Hydrostone Market in the north end of Halifax. She was feeling good today and wanted to come with me. Much nicer to have company so she picked me up about 1 and over the bridge we went. Did i mention it was a beautiful day?

The Hydrostone area in the north end is a neighbourhood that was rebuilt after the Halifax Explosion of 1917 using a building material called hydrostone. A lovely planned neighbourhood rose from the ruins of north end Halifax, wide boulevards, small service roads for driveways and things, big trees replanted. It's a really nice area though a lot of the old stone is covered over in aluminium siding for easier maintenance i suppose. There are still a few uncovered houses though. It would be even nicer in the summer when there are actually leaves on the trees and green grass lol The row along Young Street has been converted into shops and cafes so we started at one end and worked our way down. The first shop was Topiary, a store for bird lovers and gardeners. Carole is a gardener and didn't get out of there without a large bag filled with things for herself and her mother.

We bypassed the French bakery but only because we planned to go there before we came home, which we did. Mmmmm fresh bread and baked goodies (says she who is having a couple of pastries with a cuppa as we speak, knowing there is fresh, homemade raisin bread in the cupboard and a loaf of honey apricot and something else or other bread in the freezer. We browsed in a few of the antique shops and gallery/gift type stores and had lunch in the same place [livejournal.com profile] sendingsmiles went to the other day, Epicurious Morsels. Oh. My. God. Their brunch menu was exquisite (i had eggs benny and Carole had fruit and cream filled French Toast) and their regular menu. oh my. A lot of salmon on the menu and a few other things. Only one or two vegetarian dishes. We didn't see the dessert menu. Too full and the bakery was calling our name anyway. The staff is friendly and they're all dressed in black with long black aprons on, looking very chic.

There are lots of interesting shops, a good yarn shop, a fabric store, and Salvatore's, famous for pizza. The serving counter in there was done up like a villa wtih an overhanging "roof" but i couldn't get a picture of it. I did take photos though, (but you knew i would!) We walked up the street and around the block and had a nose at the mural that was causing all that controversy last week. Rock on "Dopey" LOL!

Why do you think they call him Dopey? )

After we raided the bakery, we drove up to Fort Needham park where the memorial to the Halifax Explosion is. It's a granite structure with big bells. There's a bit of history about it here but the photo is dismal. It's on the City's website so i'm going to send one of my photos to the webmaster to replace it i think. There's a link on there to a brief synopses of the Halifax Explosion as well but the CBC's website is the better. The sun was warm and the sky was still blue and cloudless and we had a really nice afternoon.
