Juno something?
Jan. 13th, 2008 07:46 pmI stayed over at Mom's last night after the Tupperware thing in the afternoon. Yes, spent more than i planned but i really wanted to have this manual chopper thing they had that i'm pretty sure i'll get a lot of use for. It was expensive but an electric one would be more again. I got a couple other things, one for keeping small veg like mushrooms in the fridge for longer before they dry out and something else to keep my Lush soaps in for the bathroom as they're scattered about because they always overflow the one bowl i use.
This afternoon we went to a movie and something to eat after. We saw the current sleeper hit, Juno starring Halifax's very own Ellen Page as pregnant teen Juno MacGuff. We both really liked this movie which was sweet but not sickening.
Juno finds herself pregnant at 16 by her friend, Paulie Bleeker, who's one of those kids who is quiet and a bit geeky but is a genuinely nice guy. He lets Juno decide what to do and she decides to keep the baby and give it to a childless couple who have advertised in a local Pennysaver weekly paper (huh?). The wife is a bit brittle and controlling and the husband is clearly not wearing the pants in the family and you can tell he's not really on board from the start for this baby thing but it's what the wife wants so that's what they do. This couple, Vanessa and Mark, live in a very large and expensive house so why they have advertised in a free ad type paper, i have no idea. I think maybe Mark put the ad in because Vanessa seemed surprised that the newspaper was this Penny saver. She's in charge of everything else in their life so i was a bit surprised she wasn't in charge of the advertising campaign.
Juno lives with her father, step-mother and small half sister. Her step mother isn't a stepmonster and though you get the feeliing it's been a bit of an uphill battle, it seems like Juno and her stepmom have come to a place where they can respect each other and this grows through the pregnancy too. Dad and stepmom are supportive, if disappointed. Juno's mother is only barely mentioned as living elsewhere with a new family. Juno is smart and sardonic, a bit mean and fiercely indepenedent. She's a dictionary of slang and pop culture and has a telephone that looks like a hamburger. As the pregnancy progresses she makes friends with Mark moreso than Vanessa and Mark seems to be able to relate to Juno through their love of music but there's nothing untoward going on here. Juno sees him just as a friend and father for her baby.
As the movie goes on, nothing large happens, it's just how she gets on with things, her relationship with her friends and family, and the growing feelings she has for Bleeker. The music soundtrack is simple and folksy and not my thing at all. I think i'd have rather heard some of the music Juno herself seems to like, 70's punk and rock but the story is a "nice little story" so i guess the music has to be more innocent too. Ellen Page is getting noticed and you can see why. She's nearly 21 years old but petite and easily passes for 16 with her hair scraped back untidiliy and dressed in grungy jeans, converse sneakers and tshirts and jackets. She's been acting for 10 years and has made a few quality Canadian films and series and this role is her breakout role. Michael Cera who plays Bleeker is another young Canadian actor that's mainly does television up to now. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman play Vanessa and Mark and were very well cast i think.
Contrast this with the Bourne Ultimatum that Mom and i saw on DVD last night? It was standard stuff really. But what really annoyed us was the handheld camera work. Shaky, and all those shots from behind one person's head where you only saw part of the other's face were really stupid.
