After reading [livejournal.com profile] _aod's post about spiders in her shower i was reminded of an old family story of mine.

We were out in the country visiting. My sister and i and the kids of Mom and Dad's best friends were out playing, The house was by a lake and it was a lovely summer day. We were playing by a wharf and we spied this BIG HONKING SPIDER on the post of the wharf. One of those huge big water spiders, it's body had to be the length of a thumb with it's legs probably twice that long. Well ok, it's that big in my memory but i'm sure it was pretty frigging big because....

We all went screaming up to the house for our fathers. Dad came out and down the lawn to the lake, thinking "oh yea, spider, silly girls afraid of a wee spider"... But he saw it and when he saw it, his eyebrows raised up at the size of it too. Ok, you guys, as he picked up a hefty rock the size of his fist, i'm going to throw this at it and knock it off but.... if he catches it and throws it back... RUN for it!!!! I believe he managed to knock it into next week, or at least into the lake.

Water spiders are the only UK species that can actually give you a nip. It's milder than a bee sting though, by all accounts.

Yikes!!!!!! But it's still better than all the many species in Australia that are common garden spiders that can kill you!

I stand behind my opinion...the only good spider is a dead one, one that wasn't killed by me either, since I can't get that close.

now I remember the story just a tad bit different..we were too petrified to jump over the huge thing..so all 4 of us were screaming at the top of our lungs for Dad..he came out and got the rock..now I can't remmber if we then jumped over it so he could throw the rock..or if your story is the exact right one..anyhow I will never get the size of that spider out of my brain.

Good God, if there was one bigger than that, it would be a star in a B movie! ;)
